Engine overheat - Exhaust Leak!! Question
Hi All,
Just a day ago, i found out my midpipe had a worn out gasket, which made a very "airy" sound when accelerating. I obviously knew I had to change the gasket.
However, I did't have time yet and left it as is, then...I got an engine overheat warning and the temperature gauge on my dash was hella high (note: all this, while I was idling on the side of the road).
The good thing to do was to stop the engine and let it cooldown, which I did.
MY QUESTION:
Do you guys think that the engine overheated (or atleast I got a warning of it) due to the midpipe leak and the fumes brought the temperature up in the engine bay (since the exhaust leak is right under the driver's seat and I was idling)? |
Or do you think this is NOT related at all and I should go to the garage?
PS. I left the car parked overnight, and drove back home on the next day without any problem. Meaning, as long as the car doesn't idle, the temperature doesn't go up, which is on coinciding with my guess of the leak bringing the temperature up in the engine bay.
Let me know what you think fam.

The exhaust leak will have no relation to the engine overheating issue.
Check your coolant level in the reservoir and the rad...likely it is low...and likely there is a coolant leak somewhere.

Check the coolant in the reservoir just like listed above and also check to see if you have a leak somewhere or a heavy pink residue around the engine. Could be you also have a leak that is causing the reservoir to drop.
Exhaust leaks would not cause overheating unless the exhaust leak is at the manifold level which would allow the hot gases to escape and cause excess heating of one of the coolant lines.

Make sure the fans are working as well. I've seen cars overheat at idle when the fans fail. You'll get air flow while driving so the problem might not present itself
