Default Custom phone mount

Hey guys, I recently got my IS and wasn't happy with any of the available phone mounts. I like to have the phone near where you look while driving which ruled out mounting down by the shifter, and I didn't want to block the air vent. I also did not want to suction cup the mount to the glass or onto the dash for obvious reasons. I began thinking about how to make my own mount. I knew I was okay with blocking the infotainment screen as I hardly use it anyways, but I did want it to be easily removable so I could view the back up camera. I noticed a gap between the trim here that I thought could be useful:

After taking some measurements I modeled a design (shown is my 2nd prototype):

My plan was to remove the suction cup from an existing phone mount, and use the guide pin to align it onto my new part. I 3D printed my part in black to match the dash and used a regular screw/washer to bolt the existing phone mount onto my design. Getting the correct screw length is critical as the part is thin and you don't want the screw poking in to the dash. Material choice is also important, ABS/PETG/nylon or some other high temp filament must be used as PLA can warp when in direct sunlight. If you only have PLA (like me), you can put it through an "annealing" process where you boil it for 10 minutes, then let it cool. This will prevent it from warping when under direct sunlight.

The mount places the phone in the perfect position for me, and the phone can be adjusted exactly how you want it. The other nice feature is it can be flipped up allowing nearly a complete view of the infotainment screen (perfect for when you're backing up). And if you do need to see the whole screen for some reason, the mount slides in and out in less than a second.

I've seen a lot of conversation on here about phone mounts so I figured I would share my solution with you guys. If anyone would like the files, I'd be happy to share, but it would likely need some modification to fit other phone mounts.

Wouldn’t it be easier just using suction mount to the flat surface? Why the need to slide the molded piece into the cluster hood?

Well there's a couple advantages to this method. A suction cup could very easily damage the dashboard surface, leaving some kind of residue or discoloration. The second reason is this mount can be removed very quickly if you want to see the infotainment screen. Having to remove and reapply a suction cup every time would get pretty annoying I think.
