Hit a crater sized pothole. If anyone has seen that meme where Vin Diesel is bracing for impact, that's how it felt.

Have NOT experienced tire pressure loss. Will drive by Discount Tire later today to see what the say. But what do you all think?

The rim damage is cosmetic at best.

With regards to the tire, if you can peel back the flaps of rubber and look inside, that will be the determining factor.
If you see just rubber only (all black), then from a safety standpoint you should be good to keep on trucking on that tire. Plus it's a rear tire, so less weight on it.
If you peel back the rubber and see the cord (like a dirty white ribbing), then the tire is garbage for sure.

I think you’re going to have a dangerous bubble in the sidewall very soon, assuming you can’t already see steel belts below the rubber.

It needs to be replaced since it looks like significant damage to your sidewall. This is what pot holes do. It's happened to us all. Better safe than sorry. Hope I'm wrong and Discount Tire says you're good to go though!

Discount tire will 100% of the time recommend you change the tire when there is any damage to side wall.

I've had a chunk ripped into the sidewall and kept it on there like pointed out above it was just into the rubber and was still showing all black.

I got new tires just today and as I was determining whether or not I should do fronts now as well I saw a big tear on the inside sidewall with threads showing. The I definitely knew I needed to replace regardless of tread ware. I recall 1 pothole but didn't think it did anything...oops.

File a claim with the city. Take a picture of the pothole before its filled.

All that matters is there's a chance it could. They can only say no.

One would have a better chance at succeeding if they can prove the city knew or should have knew about the pot hole and the pot hole exceeds the standard of trivial defect. In laymen's terms, the bigger the pothole, the harder it may be for the city to deny a claim. You'd also have difficulty if you report way after the fact.

Cities hire large TPA firms to handle claims such as these so they see hundreds of them a week.

You need to go up a tire size if they're 18s or 19s and make sure the tire hardness is at least 98Y. It should say that on the side near the numbers. I think the sidewalls are too low profile.

I'd definitely would try. My friend did it and got reimburse for a new rim and tire. He took a picture of the pothole and his wheel, sent in claim over to the city.

Did it twice, got paid for two front tires and 1 rim, second time it was denied a few years later.

how deep is the damage on those 2 cuts? i had a similar incident and went straight to Discount, they told it it was only cosmetic. i would check with a Tire Shop and/or if you want to post pics of it pulled back, that could show how deep the rips are

this pothole was a monster--cut mine and two others (while i was there), tires--we were lined up along the road....

Why would you want to do this? To answer the person asking, yes, this would work but you're essentially putting an accident claim on your vehicle's carfax when doing this which diminishes the value of the car. It will say on the carfax the car was involved in a collision.
