Default Brake pads 2017 IS200T F sport

Took my car in at 17,000 miles for 15K svc. to independent shop specializing in Lexus. Told me I had 85% of front and rear brake pads left. It's now 3000 miles later and my car is making a rubbing sound. Took to dealer yesterday and they told me I need new front pads and rotors...metal is against metal. Over $500 to do the job. I've never had a car that needed new brakes at 20K miles, and if I had 85% wear left 3000 miles ago, how is it possible that now I suddenly need new pads and rotors. If I get car back from dealer and take back to indy shop for them to look at, I have to pay dealer $115 for diagnostic. Very frustrating

Anyone ever experience this with the brakes? Suggestions?

Unfortunately, the F Sport brakes are known to wear out quickly especially in stop-and-go traffic and hard driving (obviously). It's par for the course for the brake pads to need replacement under 20k miles.

What I would be concerned about is the rapid wear in those last 3,000. Have you changed your routine or done any track driving, etc. that would cause accelerated wear?

No, I don't drive the car hard. The most baffling thing to me is the fact that 3000 miles ago I'm told I have 85% of brake pads left

OK. Well aside from that, were you the original owner, or did you get it used? It's possible that the hypothetical original owner really babied the car, or didn't have stop-and-go traffic.

Super common on F sport. I changed mine at 11k.

The reason is they are high friction specialty performance German brakes. made by BMW's supplier.

They're excellent and perform highly, but they also wear out fast.

Want more life? Get reduced performance. Lexus offers a low friction alternative thats made by Lexus's japanese supplier. They're the same price.

I'm still on original f sport brakes...bought car in 2014 and has 58500 miles. My experience has been positive with the f sport brakes aside from brake dust

I don’t think you could go through pads in 3k miles of normal driving if you tried. The independent shop must have measured incorrectly.

Normal on this car. If you own it, get used to changing out the pads and rotors often. Changed my rotors and brakes at 13k, got a thread on this as well with some good information if you want to check it out.

Also, if you hit the search forum button and search this topic, there are many threads on this as well.

I just changed on my 2019 IS300T brake pads to Akebono ASP.

had the car on woodblock in order to get to the front center jack point.

bought pads for jack stand and placed it under the jack points per service manual, inspection after first use, they def can be used a few more times before i get worried.

as for people who use LCA for jack stands, not sure if you can because there is a metal skid plate next to it.
