Default IS250 Real World Acceleration

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a used 2014 IS250, non-F Sport. I already know the cars' real world 0-60 times, and I find them acceptable for a daily driver, especially for the money. For perspective, I currently daily drive a '14 Chevy Volt, and I'm tired of how slow it is, especially when passing tourist ******* on mountain roads. Sure, it's doable in the Volt, but it's not the easiest thing to pull off. So, my question is, how good/quick is the IS250 at passing, say accelerating from 25-30mph, up to around 50mph? To clarify, I'm not looking for incredible speed here, I've already got a '96 Corvette and a '14 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 for some serious get up and go, but would like something a bit quicker for the daily commute, especially in the twisties. Thanks in advance!

i came from a 2010 corolla to this (IS250) so its essentially 2x faster.. i'd say it's good. i have my exhaust modified so people in bmw / audis / hondas race me and thats the only time where i feel like i wish i had a 350 because they all pull away from me. in other words, you'll be fine

I spent a considerable amount of time pushing my friends 14 250 FS before buying my 350. Id say the 250 is going to suit your needs. It'll make the pass. And it has just enough power in my experience you can't overdo it in the twisties your driving. I floored through on ramps and such and never needed to ease up on the accelerator with the 250. Which in a way is a good thing for a daily commuter. Handles great.

the 250's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

Agreed. I have downplayed the 250 in other threads, but if the 350 didn’t exist, I would have probably purchased the 250.

Just to play devil's advocate...that 2.5L won't do well on mountain roads. Just not enough torque. I had one for 2 days as a loaner and i rang it out pretty good. Its about as fast as my minivan. I found the 2L turbo faster and 3.5L much better. It also won't save you much on gas vs. the 3.5L so i recommend going that way if you can financially.

Just my opinion.

Motor trend tested a 2014 250 and hit. 7.2 second 0-60 and a quarter mile of 15.6@89.4mph...

for comparative purposes...

2014 Nissan Altima 2.5, 4-cylinder engine with 179 HP does 0-60 in 7.5 and a quarter mile in 16.2 @ 86 mph.

2014 Honda Civic Si, 205 HP 4 cylinder, does a 0-60 in 6.5 and a quarter mile in 15 @ 93.5mph

So basically it’s a touch quicker than a 4-cylinder Nissan Altima, but you’d get walked by a 2014 Honda Civic Si.

3-5 mph in trap speed might not sound like a lot, but it is. I have a 350 that traps at 99-100mph...and I’ve been walked by a 335i BMW with a 105mph trap speed. Thoroughly walked.

Now you have a vet and a 1000cc Kawasaki so obviously your not buying a 250 for speed. But understand you’ll have to live with it and a 7.2 0-60 with 89mph trap speed is not even really in the “quick” category of cars yet. Not painfully slow, but in the slower end of the spectrum.

someone giving their car even a bit of gas as you attempt to pass, like so many jerks do, would make it difficult for you to pass at highway speeds.

That's all true. But based on my interpretation of his needs it'll do imo.

He's repacing a Chevy Volt. 0-60 in 9 seconds and quarter mile in "sometime today".

I remember when I got my 2015 Camry SE and thought it felt "pretty peppy" with an 8.0-second 0-60 time. A low-7-second car is going to feel plenty quick for daily driving IMHO. The 300 AWD will feel a lot quicker overall, but it's going to get worse gas mileage and be more expensive from a purchase price perspective. Depends on how much you want to spend. I think the smoothness and lightness of the 250 makes it appealing.
