RR Racing Intake without a tune?
Hello all, hope everyone's safe and enjoying the holidays. Speaking of the holidays, the RR racing carbon intake is going for STOOPID cheap right now and I am very tempted on buying it. Originally I planned on saving it for when I buy the tune, but lately the fake induction noise on the oem intake has been driving me insane and I would love to get rid of it. My question would be I guess that if I bought the intake would this be an okay thing to do without the tune? I know plenty of people run AFE intakes and other different kinds while stock ecu, so I feel as though this intake should run just fine on a stock ecu. I don't expect any power gains or anything I just wanna get rid of that damn "weeeeiiiiiiiii ... WWWWEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII". Especially since I'm still on stock exhaust and its the only noise the car makes lol. Thanks guys

Reason is that because RR intake removes the crankcase line off the OEM intake and replaces it with a small red filter to vent which causes the CEL. ECU will throw a MAF sensor code
IMO not worth it unless you are sold on getting the RR tune. Depending on the intake you might be able to keep temps few degrees cooler but that's not going to translate to making a noticeable difference or bringing someone to Gapplebee's

The MAF has no way of monitoring that hose...but the ECU will now if the hose port is open to the atmosphere if the hose is not connected or the port is not blocked off...as there will be more air entering the engine than is being detected by the MAF, causing a lean mixture.
Since the RR intake tube is larger than stock, likely the MAF code that is being set is due to the fact the velocity at which the air is moving over the sensor has slowed down...that is something which the MAF can detect.
It's not a guarantee with an aftermarket intake if a CEL will set, cause it really depends on how big the intake tube is over stock.
The tune likely changes the detecting parameters of the ECU as to not trigger a CEL, along with tuning the ECU to run better with the increased volume of air.

FWIW, I emailed RR racing to ask about the intake/tune throwing a CEL. I asked them because I currently have their tune for my 300, but as of now, do not have their intake.
This was Alec's response: "Most cars will adjust but some will throw a CEL for the additional airflow. If yours does, we can retune it to adjust accordingly."
Just wanted to pass that along in case anyone finds that info to be helpful.
