Going PPE Header Route with the 3IS

I've decided to add some more noise to the car and go the header route. I'm wondering how bad the smell of the fumes is with the 3IS for those running fully catless? Is it bad enough to want to not switch? Or is it just at lights or when the car is parked?

It will smell pretty bad without cats. I am running PPE headers with G-Sport 300-cell cats on an Invidia midpipe with a Joe Z axle back and it still really smells. The G-Sport cats are the “non epa” model and when pulling into the garage, if I don’t turn the car off as soon as I’m parked the whole garage will smell like fumes, real strong, for several minutes after the car’s been off. Idling while parked on a small residential street I can smell it while standing on the other side of the street. Stopped at a light, windows up, recirculate off, the smell will slowly seep in.
Smell issues aside, I had my car catless for about a week after installing the headers. I didn’t like it. The sound was obnoxious with my setup. And I’m not talking volume obnoxious (even though it was really loud). Obnoxious in an exhaust note sense where it just wasn’t pleasant to hear, even at low rpm’s. After having the high flow cats installed, the exhaust note was perfect. The cats muted the obnoxious rasp and turned the volume down to an acceptable level. I like my exhaust loud, so don’t think I mean that the car’s quiet now.
In the end, to touch back on your question, the smell is pretty unbearable when catless and even with my “non epa” cats, it’s only marginally better. I’d recommend epa compliant high flow cats for the smell. For the sounds, it obviously depends on your setup downstream of the headers. Some midpipes may have secondary cats like OEM and that would help with the smell and sound too.
