If it's the ride that counts - not just sales &/or specifications written down on paper - even 2015 IS FSport rwd OFTEN leaves BMW 3-Series in the dust.
I've never driven a 3 series but I've always heard the ride and handling is great. That's the only thing I could see Lexus completing with. Everything else we're a bit behind. I still haven't left the Lexus family though.
As much as I love Lexus IS cars.. I don't think it's gonna take down a 330i much less a M340i. However, it will take you down the road longer with minimum repairs though.
I'll take a good V6 over a hopped up 4 cylinder, not to mention the Lexus reliability and made in Japan build quality over something that is engineered to fall apart after the lease is up.
I have owned 3 different Lexus vehicles and I have spent some time in the 3 series, but never owned one. Me personally, the Lexus is a far better car. Inside and out. It is more comfortable, more luxurious and just looks better. And the ride of a Lexus IS unmatched. So no, I don't think the 3 series will take down the IS. I personally don't like any of the German manufacturers.
Years later, these two compact luxury sports sedans are still doing battle.
I am a former 3 series owner. I considered the 2015 IS 350 F Sport a better driving car than the then F30 3 series which had evolved into a luxury car with very little sport dialed. THe BMW had a better engine and transmission than the Lexus but the Lexus was not too far behind in this department. I have not driven the 2021 IS but from all I have read it is an improved awesome driving car that strikes a great balance between sport and luxury which used to be the hallmark of the 3 series. The only issue was in the engine department which has been resolved with the introduction of IS500 and the promise of a future IS F. The newer 3 series BMWs have gotten sporty again. I think the IS is fully competitive with the BMWs with an edge in reliability but I wouldn’t go as far as saying it is a significantly better driving car.
