I see great IS-F info, but I'm not seeing what the IS 500 pads are made from in that post. Maybe I need more coffee.

I thought our stock IS 500 pads were a ceramic pad.

The general pad material doesn't matter. There are great metal based pads and great ceramic based pads. Check the intended usage and heat range.

I was responding to mg1972 who indicated he was getting a set of ISF calipers

And a wealth of info provided! But he asked what the OEM IS 500 pads were made out of to match them up to pads for the IS-F calipers. The OEM IS-F pad material might not be helpful in this case. I could be wrong though!

Were the stock caliper mounting bolts used when doing the upgrade? Coming from an IS350, but I'm hoping they're the same.

Yes, I had already gone through that thread, which as others have already pointed out, it is about ISF calipers and brake pads not IS500.

Thanks

The way the brakes feel on my IS500, I'm betting they are ceramic too.. they don't seem to have the initial bite of a metallic or semi-metallic... my guess anyway...

The pad code on the stock IS500 Front pad is Advics VC115-FG.
From Here it says their pads have "ADVANCED CERAMIC FRICTION TECHNOLOGY"

Hope that helps

So, I'm going to go with the PowerStop Z26 pads since they seem to have an FG or GG friction rating according to my Google searches and fit well (Thanks Srd555, for that info from above).

I was going to wait to post my experimental results but I can give you some feed back on this.
I had these on the front for 3000 miles, they were great as I was still in the the honeymoon faze, but as I continued to test them (read, I beat the ***** out of the brakes) I found that it gets grabbier when it gets hot, to the point that a pedal pressure that was fine before now kicks in the ABS. If you push the brakes past this temp it falls off into full fade. Now nobody is going to do six 140mph to 30mph in a row to get to that point like I did so it should be fine for normal people . These are a FG rating

Pros:
  • No dust per say. I can go two weeks and the front has as much dust as the stock rear. The dust is a light brown/tan and washes off easily.
  • No noise
  • No fade (reasonable)
  • Grip from cold is good
Cons:
  • Grabbier went hot so it doesn't feel linear (Con for me)
  • When hot, if you go from reverse to drive they make a loud clunk because they move in the caliper. I didnt hear any clunking at any other time.

I have tried other pads and will post my finding when I am over testing but these are in my good column.

Wow, great information,thanks for that..

I'm definitely not going to be doing 140mph runs. This further confirms these are a good choice (I'm sure there are better, but these sound pretty good and good value).

I look forward to reading about your future findings.

Well, the calipers made it to my house yesterday, and I put them on today. I bought a hand pump bleeder to keep from dealing with my wife . I had a hard time getting the seal just right on the bleeder screw. I even use a smaller tubing than what the bleeder came with... So. there were always some air bubbles.... I think it is good though.

I did the bedding in procedure for the Z26 pads, and they don't quite have the initial bite just yet. I'm not sure if that is due to some air still in the lines and/or pads still bedding in. I'm sure the pads are still bedding in.... I just did the procedure and about a 10 mile cool down run.

I am going to get a buddy of mine to come over and do the old school way of bleeding to be 100% sure all the air is out of the lines. Will keep folks posted on my opinion once I know everything is 100% good.

Thanks

When I bled the brakes on my ISF I used Earl's SoloBleeds with a friend in the car. The SoloBleeds made everything much easier
