That would be cool to have a guy like that here. However, the manuals are written by the engineers. Therefore, the "follow the manual" advice is always the best advice.

^^^^Actually there is a guy like that on the forums. But, he only is active on the ISF and GSF forums. Those are the two vehicles he owns plus an original Supra. He's also a moderator. His forum name is lobuxracer:

I visit all forums that feature vehicles equipped with the 2UR-GSE, so I have the benefit of his expertise.

Well check this out, straight from Lexus Maintenance Schedule

And in fine print is says:
*Please note that oil changes are performed every 10K miles, except for vehicles using non-synthetic oil, which are performed every 5K miles. See your Warranty and Services Guide for details.

0W-20 can only be a synthetic oil as far as I know which the majority of cars in the lineup use and they are all on 10k intervals. 5W-30 can go full synthetic, blended or conventional and are on 5k intervals. My wife's 2013 IS 350 is 5W-30 and they are on 5k changes. My previous 2018 IS 350 was 0W-20 and 10k. So the IS 500 just follows the same pattern here.

Personally I always go by the mileage, not the time.

Good info, and our Service Guide says 5k/6 months. Maybe I'll email Lexus and see if they'll give me a technical answer on whether or not I can switch to yearly changes with synthetic. The worst they can do is give me a generic answer and waste a few minutes of my time.

Here's the first three service guide screen shots, enough to show the pattern. For our car it's stated right there to change the oil every 5k or 6 months...

You guys are all thinking about this way too hard. Engineers always account for margin in their instructions, which means when they say 6 months, they're assuming the majority of people won't follow this and 1 year is probably ok. Again, "recommended" is the key word - not mandatory. If 6 months were really important, they'd say 3 months.

Precisely. Just like how the recommended break-in period is stated as 621 miles (1000 km) when in fact the car is sufficiently broken in at considerably lower mileage.
