To those who have put down money for a car at a dealership, did you specify color preferences? What happens if the dealer’s allotment does not include a color you care for? Do you just pass on what they have and keep waiting? This makes me wonder why even put down money if you have specific exterior/interior color preferences, since you don’t know what the dealer will get?

Some new car dealers are struggling to match consumer expectations with reality amid a crippling inventory shortage. Most manufacturers have already scaled back incentives. In what could be the most extreme example this month, Lexus eliminated up to $2,000 in rebates on its lineup of luxury vehicles.
Here in Southern California, Toyota went as far as taking nearly every lease off their website based on dealer feedback, a decision that has stood for over 2 months now.

My $1K deposit served a few purposes:
1. Told the dealership I was serious.
2. Prompted monthly check-ins. Only to say they new nothing… :-(
They took my color choice and have confirmed it twice, so I feel every effort will be made to get it. I’m #1 in line, so I will have the option to pass the car to the next person if it’s not what I wanted.
In my opinion, the deposit garnered more effort than a simple reservation.

I wouldn 't get a V8...sure, I would have loved to get one but after dealing with an RC that had that hideous gap in the front (AWD), not going to make that mistake of buying a car that has something I can't stand to look at. I am OCD and if the 500 gets built looking like that, then I will just pass. Not going to spend 85k (cdn all in) for a vehicle that looks odd. Now mind you, if I get the 500, it would be for 4 to 5 years. I haven't officially ruled it out yet, I need to see what it will look like when it arrives and whether there are options to solve it. Who knows, it may not have the silver part, or is that their plan to update in 2023 and annoy the initial buyers.
I am in the same situation....

That makes sense. If they have started production of the IS500, given that it's about 12 weeks from start to delivery, that would be about right. Hoping they will start with the LE first with the regular ones afterward..

If it's still very difficult to get by then I guess I'll just wait some more lol.

^^ Same. It’ll be worth the wait in my opinion. I had hoped to capitalize on the used market for my trade-in though, my ‘16 350 has only 43K miles on it currently.

^^ well, I dont think the used market will change, and if it drops it's because the new car market is back to normal hence you could then have a better deal on your 500. I think in the end, it will be a wash

^^ Would a dealership be in a position to secure a future value of vehicle? So many market unknown that if I were them, I'd be nervous. I can see a dealer doing so for 30 days, but for 5 to 6 months in advance, I'd be surprised. I am not saying that it's not doable but certainly not something I would have thought myself to ask. I mean condition of the vehicle change, mileage changes, wear on tires and brakes, market fluctuations (drop in the used car market).
DLPTony - If you do ask the dealer, please us know as this will be very interesting for sure

^^ That is quite impressive. Like I said, I can see the price be locked in for 30 days. It's like the promotions, they can lock the rate and incentives for 30 days but that is as far as they would go so this is REALLY NICE!! Good for you to make such an arrangement!
