This article about the NY/NJ port is a little dated but interesting reading: https://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/a...5500-cars.html

I honestly don't think the manufacturer's really care. They just build them and sell them to the dealerships. They make their profits and build more. The dealerships now own them and can sell them for whatever the market will bring in. It goes both ways. Prior to supply chain issues I was always able to get 15 to 20 percent off MSRP on my previos 3 Lexus's, including the 2021 IS 350 that I paid $39,xxx last January. I think going back several years ago MSRP's were set too high for the market conditions and now they seem to be set alittle too low. Just my opinion on the matter.

^^ It may not be anything illegal but it is unethical in my opinion and I hope people will stay away and support dealers that respect customers

I'd say its also a branding and image thing. Lexus has built a strong reputation, vision, and experience that price gouging reflects poorly on. It may not be Lexus itself doing it, but the dealerships essentially represent Lexus as a brand being the everyday contact with people pretty much

Japanese are very honorable people. They would never agree to mark ups. They would commit sepuku and split their belly if that thought even crossed their mind.
Americans and Canadians are far less honorable, which is why you see mark ups. Will the Japanese have a stern word with North America? Unlikely. That's how WWII started.

^^ I am not disputing the fact that dealers are struggling with lower inventory. How do you explain that some dealers are staying afloat without doing the market adjustments? How do we know that parents companies aren't assisting dealers with somehow, and furthermore, while they are not selling as many cars, they aren't offering rebates anymore so MSRP should be sufficient. I feel for dealers, some are legit and we all agree that if they were reasonable in their market adjustments, we would not be having this conversation. How can a dealer justify a 30k markup on a vehicle? In the end, people don't need to buy a car now, while I respect your point of view, if anyone would try to take advantage of me, I would walk. I doubt we'll see a 30k MSRP hike ![Wink](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I was also going to add, I understand they didn't receive a bailout but customers shouldn't be the one bailing them out either. The MSRP is what the car is worth based on the cost of producing the car, not based on the profit margins of the dealers. Maybe car companies should move to ordering through an online concierge and have only dealers for servicing the vehicles, there would be less overhead

Is it…??
I think too many dealers lost out on profits by selling their LC 500 Convertible Inspiration Series for MSRP last year.
That explains the insane markups on this new IS 500.
The used market is crazy too. A used one just sold last month (fellow forum member bought it) for $50k over MSRP a year later….
Welcome to the new market.

^^ I agree, I have never seen anything like this before. It is like a housing bubble for cars (lol) Additionally, like many of you have said, I will never pay anything above MSRP, I would like to have an IS 500 but I don't need one ![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I just chatted with Cam at Hilton Head Lexus in SC; he has a LE available for $68,790. His contact info: https://www.facebook.com/askforcam/ -- cdespres@hiltonheadlexus.com -- (617) 415-6547
Car is expected at the dealer before Christmas. I plan to fly out after new years & drive it home to California (should be a great trip to break-in & get acclimated). Super excited!!

Toyota embracing small flaws as supply chain pressures bite
Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday said it is happy to use scratched or blemished parts from suppliers as the world's biggest car producer tries to trim costs amid a production-curbing global chip shortage and rising material costs.Toyota's acceptance of good enough by using parts it would have thrown away in the past marks a significant change both for a company renowned for stringent quality control and for Japanese manufacturing practices that often prioritised perfection over speed to market.
