So I've been doing a lot of comparisons on the different drive modes - Normal, Sport, Sport+ and now I am 100% convinced that there are 3 levels of steering stiffness. Obviously Sport+ being the stiffest.
Also, even setting the steering to Sport in Custom drive mode doesn't stiffen the dampers like Sport+
So for whatever reason, Lexus didn't document the 3 distinct IS500 driving profiles differently than how they were set up for the IS350.

Another weird thing I noticed...
I was going 60-65 and floored it to pass someone while in sport mode. The car downshifting to 4th gear instead of 3rd gear for the pass. 60-65 is perfect RPM for 3rd gear, but the car didn't do it. I found it very strange. Anybody else have the same thing?

Simply, the automatic transmission in anything other than Sport+ is lazy and doesn’t know you want to be in 3rd gear to gun it at 65. You need to be in sport+ and Manual to get the exact results you want. Downshift yourself to 3rd to shoot to above 4000rpm and rip it. I know, it shouldn’t be this way but it is.

same exact experience but I’ve more or less found the solution:

It is really stupid. Punch it at 60 in the IS 500 and the ES 350 and it's about even because the IS won't downshift like it should.
The paddles work great but I dont want to do that every time. Maybe it will improve now that my break in period is over and I can drive it harder.

I tried to floor it in Sport+ and only got 4th gear there too. In normal mode it would only give me 5th gear ![EEK!](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/eek1.gif)

Looks like I will have to unless it "learns" and gets better. I used to paddles at 60 mph to pass a semi truck and I hit 100 mph before I got around him. This car pulls great when it's in the right gear. I just don't want to have to paddle shift if some scrub in a Mustang wants to get frisky lol I want to mash the gas and go, by the time I get in the right gear it will be too late.

I confirm S+ won't go in 8th gear in auto mode, just tried it myself this afternoon. I had to take a quick drive without the kids and GF to start breaking in that beast...
And that 8 speed tranny is quite different than the 6 speed on the AWD IS, kinda lame and tame when it's cold almost like it's slipping, but once hot, way quicker than the 6 speed!

But now that the adaptive logic has learned my driving styles Sport+ won't go past 6th lol. This mode really transforms a pretty sleepy luxury sedan into something more enthusiast friendly.

^^ haha, that's weird, I don't even have 500km on mine and didn't really drove it hard yet. On the hwy, as soon as I flipped it in S+, it automatically downshifted in 7th. And back in 8th as soon as I went back to Sport.

That makes sense for sure but I guess your car hasn't gotten time to learn your driving style yet. I already have 3000kms on mine lol.

I haven't gone into sports + yet and I've got about 650 miles. Am I taking this break in period too strictly? My drive pulse is still 96 and I've only had fast acceleration 7 times total.

In my opinion, yes. If you break in a car TOO gently it can do more harm than good. Manufacturing techniques nowadays means that engines are not fragile and actually require high heat to properly bed the piston rings and cylinders for break in. The only way to generate heat is by revving it into the upper RPMs. For the first few hundred miles gentle is okay, but if you want proper power output at all RPM ranges it needs to be taken up into those upper limits.
