Key fob transmitting

This is probably the same for all models that use the same type of fob. Mine for my 2015 IS350c will lock, unlock doors, and unlock trunk if you're near it. It doesn't have any remote start or anything. But in testing I have found the lock-unlock feature works from as far away as 40' and through 3 walls. In other words, it will act just as if you had it in your pocket standing next to the car. This is with a used battery testing at 3.0v (new ones test about 3.27v).
So if you're thinking of keeping your car secure by hanging the remote anywhere nearby, you are possibly still sending some signal unless you store it in a key fob faraday pouch. I suppose you wouldn't waste any battery power either if there was nothing to receive it. I use two of these:

Ronkelly,
You raise a very interesting point as I keep my key on the window sill in the hallway, just 10 feet from the car with one brick wall in between.
I tried this but it doesn't seem to follow your rationale. Most certainly, if the fob is a long way away - say the other end of the garden then the press-button lock-unlock responds. However only if the fob is in the immediate proximity of the car door does the lock disengage on grabbing the handle.
Seems they are clever people at Lexus, even back in 2010.

This style of key fob that is used by almost every car maker is a big security risk. By design, the key fob is always transmitting its ID so that the car doors and trunk can be opened without pressing a button on it. This is the security risk. The more sophisticated car thieves have a radio receiving device that can receive the key fob transmission and store it. The car thief stands outside your house with this receiver and captures the code from your key fob, They then come back at another time, such as night, and use their device to emulate your key fob and steal your car.
So Ron Kelley's advice is a very good thing to follow, especially if you park your car outside at night.
