Default 2010c Second Key problem

Hiya. A little background. I've had this 2010c now since around 2013. I used to drive it often. Then I gave it to my wife and she's been driving it for years. On occasion, I will still drive it. We have two sets of keys. For the sake of this problem, we'll call the key she uses all the time as Key 1. And then there is the spare that I will use, Key 2.

I just put a new battery in Key 2 in case that was part of the problem. This is what's happening, and it never has been this way for years in the past.

I get Key 2. Go to start the car. Door closed, sit in seat, foot on brake, push button, it just wakes up the dash but doesn't start. I try to take foot off the brake and back on, still won't start. Key is in my lap about a foot from the start button. Door lock unlock won't work.

Then I go get Key 1, set Key 2 away from car. And it won't lock or unlock. I get in car with it, foot on brake, and it starts fine. I swap the two keys and then Key 2 is working fine in all ways. ???

The manual is a little more specific to actually put the key emblem up against start button and do the brake, not brake routine and start button to rotate through various modes. I guess next time I can try that but the point is I've never had this happen with these two keys in the past. They both worked fine with the car.

Am I missing something?
