In my opinion its just a cosmetic thing...
On the LS you can clearly look through the faux tips on the bumper and see the ground and etc... (could be better designed IMHO)
Now they have added these shields or funnels on the IS-F faux tips, more than likely due to the poor reviews it received initially.
It looks better and you can't see the ground anymore... but like Ryan said they are not connected.. its an illusion.

In fairness, the exhaust needs to be able to move around a bit,
and the bumper does not move. Also, as an engineer, you'd prefer
to isolate the heat of the exhaust tip from the urethane bumper.
Doesn't bother me...
At least functionally, the "auspuff" comes out the stacked tips,
and that's all that really matters.

There is a lot and I mean a lot of general hate for Lexus I see on other places and people just pick the cars apart without really knowing ANYTHING about them..

the reviews are ok, but don't bother getting into the comments - it'll just **** you off - I stopped surfing to autospies becuz of this.
