I am wondering why some of you are considering getting an extended warranty. From what I have read on this forum, it seems that Lexus prides it's self on its quality and reliablity. Granted this is a new model, but much of this car is based on other models mainly being the IS and LS motor. Plus the lexus warranty that comes with the ISF is pretty good, they even throw in alingment and wheel balancing for a year

Per Lexus ISF sub-website:
Basic Warranty coverage: 48 months or 50,000 miles
Wheel alignment & balancing: 12 months or 20,000 miles
Powertrain Warranty: 72 months or 70,000 miles
Corrosion Perforation: 72 months, regardless of mileage

First off, Lexus vehicles do have problems. They just have less of them than other cars, and more importantly, from my experience Lexus dealers treat me very well when I have problems and make sure they are fixed quickly.

Second, extended warranty covers issues that aren't entirely Lexus' fault (or their fault at all). For example, about a year and a half ago I was driving my LS430 on the highway when a pickup in front of me blew a tire. One of the tire shreds hit my front bumper, and of course it had to hit directly on one of the parking sensors. I didn't realize it until the next time I slowed down sufficiently for the sensors to activate. But anyway, I brought it in for repair and did not expect it to be covered, but they only charged me a deductible. I'm sure the cost on that is pretty atrocious.

You can buy Lexus Platinum warrany cheaper at end of factory warrany period tax free from an out of state dealer in 3 years 11 month and 28 days and you have interest on $2030 for 4 years. You should not pay more than:
7 YEAR 75000=1540.00
5 YEAR 100000=1345.00
6 YEAR 100000=1580.00
7 YEAR 100000=2030.00
Is there any extra cost to purchase the warranty later rather than sooner? Is there any way they can pass on selling you the warranty if your car has had problems (not that I'm anticipating any)? My IS350 never had one problem in the 2+ years I owned it..

No. It is same price though if it had a lot of problems would you want to keep it with/without an extended warrany?

The comment about the warranty being gone if the car is totalled is wrong. You can request a refund for the unused portion of the insurance. I have done this, and they will pay you back if you have not run out of coverage.

there have been numerous articles in the news that extended warranties for reliable cars actually cause most owners to loss alot more than benefit... since extended warranty doesn't include the wear and tear stuff...

No matter what brand of car, the best way to hold off on the extended warranty until the regular warranty is about to run out. Besides not having to pay now, after 4 years/50K miles you'll get a sense if you have a problem car or not and you can decide then.

Agreed. I'll purchase it from Darrell @ Sewell before the current warranty expires.
