It's electronically limited.
Back in the day, some used the Apex'i Rev Speed meter to override the limiter on many Toyota models. Not sure if this still works with the newer Toyota/Lexus/Scion models.

how did your friend take you at top speed in the M3. the new ones are supposed to be limited to I think 160 or lower. Im sure it was not as high as the F's 172. I read somewhere that if the lex wasant limited it could hit 190....

Yeah I'm pretty sure BMW advertises the M3 electronically limited at 155. I've heard of people taking off the limiter though already. I heard it only gives them like 10 more mph.

Also MB amg can take off limiters with some package..
