Default ISF exhaust

Someone please help me understand the exhaust system on the ISF. Am I hearing this correctly, that the tips are not connected to the muffler or tail pipes? Does anyone have a pic of this? Does this create a carbon mess underneath?

That is correct, the tips aren't connected to the muffler or tail pipes. Check your inbox for a PM picture and thats a good question about the carbon mess underneath, I have no idea, next time I wash it, I'll get under there and check it out

Funny, I was gonna respond with the same Mike. As an owner, I dunno what all the hate is about. I don't mind the rear profile nor that the tips aren't "connected". Visually, is doesn't stand out as an issue to me. I haven't seen any carbon buildup that is externally noticeable but I haven't actually crawled underneath to look either. Now you have peaked my interest.

I will say that the brake dust is a mess, probably to be expected. Splash from puddles or rain make the graphite-like dust adhere to the body panels and rear bumper. Much more noticable than anything related to the exhaust.

Default Thanks for the replies.

Am I seeing things clearly in the pic you sent Mike? It appears that there is a tailpipe inside of the tip?

Actually, I'm finding a big benefit of the tips not directly connected. The tips stay nice and clean and don't turn black.

It's clearly by design, they went through some considerable trouble to build the exhaust "diffusers" that way. It would have been simpler to just tag some chromies on the ends of the tail pipes and be done with it.

Marketing baloney or science, clearly the the tips were put there intentionally. Mine are staying. If anything, the soot problem should be better I suspect.

The brake dust, well, that's why the wheels are grey!!!

After 3 days of ownership, you should have seen the mudslide when I first hit them with a hose!

I think that has a little to do with the camera view, I just looked at mine and there is enough space between the tips and tailpipe for me to stick my hand between them. There is a picture of someone with their hand in between them somewhere on the F forums, if I can find it I'll send it you to, if not, I'll take one when the heat gets under 100 degrees later today

Default Thanks for the pic

It does appear that at least one of the tips is not properly aligned with the tailpipe. I guess the exhaust gases that do not pass thru the tips will go thru the mesh covering.

thanks all for the comments.

All I have to do is sell my car and an ISF will be in my driveway.

I've posted this image a few times (this is a picture I took of the demo IS-F at one of Lexus/LV's launch events). Just for the record, on production vehicles the spacing can't be accessed from under the car like the notorious pre-production photo(s) show.

Looks like the days of people hating the ISf exhaust tips being disconnected from the pipe are over.

A friend just bought an Audi R8 V10, its got exactly same exhaust dsconnected from the pipe, it even has the same looking oval tip, just one big one instead of two for ISF.

Way to start the trend Lexus.
