I see nothing wrong with removing the charcoal filter and using a K&N/BMC drop in for a daily driver unless you live in the desert and perpetually drive behind a semi w/out mudflaps.
I've personally never seen a motor fail due to the install of a K&N. That being said most of the extra dirt allowed into a motor via a K&N comes from the filters folded edges/ridges. The creases make for larger gaps in the cotton gauze.
BMC bends their edges vs folding, so in theory less dirt should be allowed in, yet they flow along the same lines as a K&N. They are also a good bit more expensive than K&N fwiw.

Keep in mind caymandive removed his charcoal filter and lost 1 hp consistently on his 350. No idea why, but it was repeatable. Not all things with airflow are intuitive.

Did he remove it on the dyno or did he give the ECU a chance to adjust?

Also 1hp is a negligible amount when it comes to a ~350rw dyno. That's well within normal pull to pull variance.

If we can't hit 20rw at peak with just tuning I'll have BMC make a drop in and we'll get rid of the charcoal filter. It looks like we won't have an IS-F to fab our CAI kit until the second week of Jan.

Just put mine in too and I didn't loosen the elbow initially, but after some wrestling, I did.
That's the way to install it easily.

BTW, mine was $79 including tax in PartSource up here in Canada. Seemed a little exhorbitant.....

Got mine at Amazon for FREE! It was $50 bux, but they had an offer for an Amazon Credit Card with a $50.00 dollar credit for applying. Works for me

Regarding the K&N filters: I am happy you guys found those, but maybe you could discuss them in a different thread. It actually would probably be useful information to others (since it's a mod)

i have.. havent got it tested or anything... but its definably worth doing... its a nice and easy 60$ mod...

**FYI**

when reinstalling the air intake box to your car... a warning light will come on when you turn the car on... dont worry nothing is wrong.. you just need to reset the car (unplug the battery)... you will also need to reset the windows and time

to reset the windows just roll down every window down and then up... and it will then work automatically again

I'm expecting a slight increace in mpg's and a slight deepening of intake/exhaust sound but that's about it. The incidental increase in hp won't be noticed in seat of the pants.
I won't know for sure in this ride until March, but from other installs, I'm banking on the above changes.

Colin.

Here is a trick for avoiding the warning or Check Engine Light.

While installing any drop in filter:

DO NOT UN-PLUG THE MAF SENSOR WITH THE IGNITION IN THE ACC or ON POSITION.

I have. I don't really notice a difference in sound or performance. But if there is an increase, it would probably be too small to feel. But, I've used K&N stuff for years, and I'm definitely glad I did it. IMHO, K&N should realize that this car exists, and produce filters for it. K&N lists no filters for the F at all. I used K&N oil filters in my last car, a G35 coupe.
