usually when you take the cats off cars... some unburned gas escapes out of the engine and burns its way down the exhaust.. thats what that noise usually is..

The exhaust fart sound is normal for certain conditions on deceleration. With the secondary cats gone you really can't get around it. I had the same sounds with my IS350 when the Secondary cats were gone. Driving around in auto mode would be best if you don't want to hear the sounds.

I have it also, just means your running rich and excess gas escapes and it creates back pressure.

its usually fuel that was unburnt i believe. if you had the secondary cat it would catch that and silence it. it did that on my STI when i went with a catless down pipe.

No you won't have issues running rich. You would have issues if you were running lean all the time.

Depends on how rich. If its rich enough to wash down the cylinder walls and strip them of their oil, yes, it will do damage. It's typically pretty hard to do that with modern EFI though. It wasn't too hard in days of yore when knowing how to jet carburetors was as much art as it was science.

Hey Guys,

Lots of different info being posted in here. Some of you got it right!!

The back fire / pop on engine decel is from the secondary cats being removed.
It will be heard more in the higher rpms or throttle down in manual shift mode.

If Normal driving in Normal Auto Mode, your not going to hear any back firing, pops or "farting".. LoL

- Very common on full aftermarket exhaust replacement setups.
Especially when primary or secondary cats are removed.

Nothing dangerous in this application..!!

As “caymandive” mentioned….
I too had the same sounds with my IS350 Full Exhaust setup.

I have quoted some info below for better explanation.
Also, please focus mainly on the bold & highlighted sentences.

Causes:
- Exhaust system backfires occur in engines that have an emission system malfunction, like an air injection system diverter valve problem, an exhaust leak, or when the catalytic converter has been removed.

- In some high-performance vehicles, when a driver shifts up and lets off the accelerator, the engine has a moment of running rich. This causes an incomplete burn which causes the fumes to explode in the exhaust system along with an audible clacking sound.
However this condition is a result of working smog equipment, and is unlikely to cause any damage.

- A fuel injected engine may backfire if an intake leak is present (causing the engine to run lean), or a fuel injection component such as an air-flow sensor is defective.

Common causes of backfires are:

Poor or unregulated engine timing is often a cause of intake backfires, but can also be responsible for exhaust backfires. Improper wiring in the ignition can also lead to timing issues and backfires. Low fuel pressure, clogged fuel filters, and weak fuel pumps could cause a severe lean air-to-fuel ratio during fuel injection.
Missing or damaged catalytic converter can result in backfires out the tailpipe.

Applications:
- With older engine designs, backfiring can be common or unavoidable. Backfire is rare in modern vehicles with fuel-injection and computer-controlled fuel mixtures.

- In drag racing, backfires in the intake usually result in the complete destruction of the intake manifold, carburetors, supercharger, and sometimes engine.

- Cars with sports exhausts (both factory-fitted and aftermarket) are much more likely to backfire. In some circumstances the backfire is seen as an additional perk of the car. The TVR Cerbera is an example of a car factory-fitted with sports exhausts, leading to a large amount of backfires on engine braking.

Regards,

Joe Z
