I had a similar issue with an 03 AND 04 Cobra, and it turned out that they had defective cylinder heads, due to narrow colling passages, causing the valves to bend and hit against the guide. This would cause this ticking sound that could mostly be heard from the front fender areas with the hood closed. This cannot be mistaken with injector pulses, which ticks, but not a metal on metal sound.

Now we all know the answer to the reported problem, with the recent announcement from Toyota. Toyota should include the IS-F in the recall and replace all valve trains.
