Question Is it faster to drive in Manual or Auto "Sport" mode for DD?

Hey guys,

I’ve put just over 3500 miles on my car and I have to admit for the most part I’m pretty happy with the IS-F and don’t have M3 withdraw…..(still like the e93 m3 cabrio look more though and really miss the manual tranny I’m so used to driving)

Maybe it’s going from an inline 6 to the heavy V8 but I feel my car does not get that great gas mileage except when I drive it lugging around town in regular auto mode. The car shifts from 1 – 3 – 5 – 8 and then if I use cruise on the highway it gets “ok” mileage but that’s not how the car was intended to be driven!

My question is how do you guys drive the car? Do you leave it in auto mode, hit the sport button and let the computer do the shifting? Does this get the best gas mileage as a DD?

What if I left it in manual mode and do my own shifting ~ does it matter at that point if I turn on the “sport” mode?

Also I noticed when I’m in manual mode the cruise control does not engage, is that normal?

I have to admit coming from manual gearboxes most of my cars all my life, no automatic is as smart in a daily driving scenario. Sure they can shift faster but definitely not as smart. The Lexus engineers really did a good job on the ISF however as I noticed during aggressive driving in “sport’ mode, heavy braking activates the perfect blip downshifts automatically from the Lexus computer. That is VERY IMPRESSIVE!

I’d like to hear how other IS-F drivers shift their cars?

Thanks
rick

If I'm racing I have it in sport mode on, manual paddleshift mode and traction control fully turned off. Using manual paddleshift mode will gain u a few tenths quicker then left in automatic mode. It'll be faster in manual mode as long as u shift right.

For driving normal everyday: left in Automatic mode, normal mode, traction control on.

Daily drive: get in. Push the button. Put it in D. Drive.

Performance drive: get in. Push the button. Push Sport mode for throttle response. Press and hold VSC until it goes off. Shift to D and slide over to M. Ready for the track.

I usually run in auto/sport. It just "feels" better for daily driving.. I generally get 18-20mpg, but my car has the 4.10 rear end swap, so my mileage suffers a little..

I jump in, and push the sport button and turn on my Blitz Throttle controller on S1. If I feel like someone wants to give me a run I switch the Blitz to S2.

I drive in manual mode with paddle shifters almost exclusively. I only use automatic mode in traffic or if I have a cup of DD coffee in hand (cup holders suck in this car).

I am also in normal mode maybe 80% of the time and save sport mode when the mood strikes for a spirited drive.

I use Auto and sport mode all the time. I use manual when racing or track. If I am at the track i turn off VSC also, or if I want to do a burnout.

If no passengers:
D. Normal mode for about 3 minutes til the car's warmed up then I press "sport"

Someone in passenger seat I want to impress:
Manual mode, and as I'm flicking gears around revving it up enough for them to hear the 3500rpm roar and I tell them about the paddles being made of Magnesium.

Parents as passengers:
D, normal mode.
