Question Winter Tires 18" or 19"

well i have two packages from tire rack. the 18" package, i can get the new blizzak lm60 with the wheels and for the 19" package i am able to get the blizzak lm25 closeout special with wheels which comes to about $15 dollars cheaper then the 18" which is not much but wat should i pick. 19" or 18" any suggestions. i know many people are runnin 18" winter setup, and some 19" setup. let me know the advantages and disadvantage of 19" or 18" compared. thanx. im on my phone so excuse me if my grammar is off.

I would do 18's, mostly because when you wear out the 19's its going to cost a heck of a lot more to replace them in the long run.

Also make sure the rim width is as thin as possible (obviously accounting for clearing brakes). Thinner wheels in snow = better traction and lower likelihood of your car turning into a sled.

The is-f can be driven in snow you just need the right tires and a light foot.

LOL!

The IS F drives just fine in the winter....which many owners have shown in multiple threads.

Enjoy your garage queen.

I went with 18's and they've been very good. I've got the LM 25 V's and am very happy, but I'm sure the LM 60's are just as good if not better. There are many threads on here regarding winter driving, and I believe, the majority of owners have gone with 18's....but have a look around on here.

If ISF is driven in the snow with snow tires, is the chain required?

I went 18's - but we've had some really poor roads here (potholes) lately. In addition to having more meat, they're cheaper. I suppose going square - 18 x 8 all around is cheaper because you can rotate them, but I think 225s in the rear give up too much in terms of traction so I kept the stagger - 255 rear, 225 fronts.

Chains aren't legal here...so no.

We've got a foot of snow this past week and the F is still easy to drive.

i think death nailed it on the head. 18 would be cheaper in the long run when you wear down your tires and need to replace them

If traction is the only real issue in the question, 18s are the way to go. You probably also want to go with a thinner tire width.

unless roads are nicely packed or plowed, its too low. and your definition of "just fine" might be different then most. it is a front engine, rear wheel drive, v8 driven "sports sedan". it is far worse off then any front wheel drive.

seeing that you have a mercedes ml and soon to have a x5, i doubt your driving yours. and i would be hard pressed to find a legitimate reason for you to drive it if you did.
I drive my F every day....the wife drive's the ML the majority of the time. It's just a car....one that I love....but still just a car. I drive it year round...hard in the summer...take the 90 lb puppy in it. The only reason we're adding a 3rd vehicle is to reduce the mileage on both the ML and F.

And yes...I drove it all weekend...including Friday.

thanx for the suggestions. i ended up gettin the 18" all around with blizzaks lm60. this car is my DD and i dont plan on storing it in the garage. i was goin to do that but my brother in law came back from service so he is usin his car so i dont have a winter car. plus i wanted to have some fun in the snow if you know wat i mean. anyways i will take it easy and just use the snow mode when the time comes, its about time put that dam switch to use.

How is the F comparable to any of the cars you mentioned? Power, nope...price, nope....prestige,nope...four doors, nope.

The F is a great performance sedan and is very capable in the winter. Guess they put the "Snow" mode in because it shouldn't be driven in the winter.

There are lots of M3, C63 and RS4 owners that drive their cars year round too. As long as you don't drive like an idiot, the F is actually quite good with a proper winter set up.
