Shortly after filling, it's because you are probably somewhere where you will have to start and stop a bit. The acceleration fuel usage is the first thing the car will register after you fill up and will therefore be low.
At the end of the tank, the system is processing all of the driving you did with the car over that tank of gas. City/Highway/Idling is all taken into consideration to get a final average.
If all you do is drive up and down the strip all day, you would probably see around 12-14 MPG average. If you are cruising on the highway a lot (not stop and go), you would be in the 20s.
I average about 19 and drive pretty conservatively.

i generally see about 14-16 on a new full tank of gas. it slowly creeps up to the 20s easily once you're on the highway. i wouldnt make too much of it at the beginning of a new tank. at the end, i think maybe theres a lot of stopping and going. maybe traffic, maybe street routes, maybe some WOTs--but to have 13-14 at the end seems low if you're simply cruising without really stopping or having to accelerate a lot. it has more to do with driving style and area than the car itself.

you guys got heavy lead foot or the gauge is faulty... sheesh...
i got easily 18-19 average before the intake and exhaust modification, and it's now around 16-17 because i'm more prone to hit the accelerator harder to hear the exhaust note.

Gauge is accurate. I got 5.3 mpg on a track event weekend. I normally get ~20 mpg with mixed city/highway, more highway than stop and go.

Thanks guys,
I do drive short trips to work in manual and sport mode...I tend to step on the gas because I like the sound the car makes but my wife hates it.
