Diesels are not nearly the same as gasoline in this situation. What I believe to be the root cause here is using variable cam timing to create EGR without having EGR plumbing which can clog and fail - it can also be blocked or bypassed - so the OEMs are looking at reducing parts count by achieving the same result by closing the exhaust valve while there's still some exhaust gas in the cylinder. When the intake valve opens, there's a small positive pressure in the cylinder spitting exhaust gas (and it's carbon) up into the intake port. and the carbon is collecting on the cooler surface of the intake port and valve. This NEVER happens on a diesel. It can't. A diesel has no throttleplate, so it gets a full air charge on every single cycle which means pressure in the intake is invariably higher than in the cylinder. There's no good reason in the world to introduce EGR into a diesel so the cam timing is set in a way to prevent it entirely. You'll never see this kind of problem in a properly functioning diesel engine.

It looks like me and some friends are going to Byron this Saturday but we are still working on the exact date. So I am interested to see if there are any real differences in ET & MPH. It sure feels better seat-of-da-pants but yall know how that goes.........
