Default My 2010 ISF vs. my buddy's 2010 M3 DCT!

Well my best friend and business partner just sold his 2006 M6 and picked up a 2010 4door M3 with DCT. He got his M6 new in 2006 and sold it with exactly 50k miles on it. He had zero problems with it and wanted something different.
We went out last night and did a few runs. We did many runs including 0-120, and rolls from 20, 40 and 60mph all the way to about 120mph.

I can say that the ISF lost in every run. It was not a destruction but by 120mph the M3 was ahead like 1-2 cars depending on how we started. The DCT is the difference maker. We start out pretty even and every gear change he moves up a little. 100ms for ISF vs 8ms of M3. I was very impressed by the M3.

I am not upset at my choice of selecting the ISF over the M3,since I wanted to try something different. But the M3 def has my respect. I also think that my 20" wheels were somewhat limiting my ISF. Today i was looking at some dynos of ISFs and i also think that i may have started in too low of a an RPM during my runs. I was starting about 4500rpm, but it looks like the power really does not come on till about ~5000. At 4500 RPM ISF is putting down about 250whp and at 5000RPM about putting down about ~320whp. I am going to run him again starting at 5000rpm and see if that changes things.

I ran the car in Sport Mode, Manual but with trac and VSC on. Does turning off the trac/VSC have any effect on acceleration in a straight line?

You guys should try swapping cars and see what happens for the runs. Then you'll know for sure that it's the car.

In my experience turning off the aids def. yields better results, but I'm no expert so I'll let others chime in.

Without blowing my horn i am a much better driver than him. He had just gotten his M3 two days ago and barely knew the car. I have 7K miles on my car and know it well. The only mistake i may have made was starting at 4500 rpm instead of 5000rpm which definitely puts down more power.

Your 20s and about +150 lbs more curb weight vs his 18s are big disadvantages, in my opinion.

He has the 19" Performance M3 wheels. The 4door M3 is listed at 3726lbs and ISF at 3780lbs. That is only a 50lb difference in curb weight.

Not news to me.

I already knew that the M3 nips the IS-F in outright performance back in 2008 when either R & T or C & D did an test on both and based on multiple tests by others afterwards.

I obviously think the IS-F is a superior choice overall inspite of that because otherwise I would be driving an M3

What i mean is that we didnt exactly take off from 20, or 40 or 60. We started give or take a couple of mph up or down until in what ever gear i was my RPM was reading ~4500rpm and we nailed it in a roll. So for example, what ever speed it takes to do ~4500rpm in 2nd gear in the ISF we would line up at that speed and after 3 honks we would stomp it.

i understand now
maybe u both werent at identical revs?
because i think it should have been closer
start from a stop, and it will prob come down to launch and reaction time
I find stop more fun
but I wish i had a friend with a m3 so i could race him

It's your wheels. There is no other reason to lose to an m3. Dct is quicker... But not by much. My friend has a dct and stock to stock he can't keep within 2 cars of me. Put the stocks back on and run from a 45

For sure. We live on the same street so next time we are going to run during day time so the video comes out well. Next time i am going to turn of the VSC and start at a little higher RPM l~5000rpm and see if it makes a difference.

They are 3 piece MC3 wheels. I love them and get compliments daily.
