Don't know about China, but in Japan, "4"(shi) means "death". Not good if you're superstitious! It's kinda like the numbers "13" or "666" in America.

"4" sounds like death in Chinese. "8" sounds like fortune. So if you see a license plate with a shltload of 8's, chances are the owner's Chinese.
