Centric Rotor pics - Hone pattern question?
I did my front brakes over the weekend. Installed Carbotech "bobcat 1521" compound pads and Centric rotors.
The rotors are made in China. Did not know that up front. I live close to Tire Rack, so shipping was faster and total price less than the Raybestos from Roc Auto.
The rotors look completely identical to the OEM and the photos of the Raybestos, except for the hone pattern. The fins inside are the same design, the rotors are mill balanced and exhibited no issues with run-out once mounted. The bed-in went as expected. No pulsing and no vibration at highway speed. No squealing or anything else. Seems like everything is working normally. The feel once bedded in seems to be about the same as the originals.
My only question is the surface hone of the new rotor. It seems rougher than I would like. They appear to be Blanchard ground at the factory, yielding a non-directional pattern. This is a good thing, but I think the grit used was a little rough as the grinding/honing marks are pretty coarse. But I'm not a brake rotor expert.

Yeah, Tire Rack shows both front and rear rotors. I only needed to do the fronts at this point.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about it. It should seat the pads very quickly, but it will probably wear them a little faster until it is polished down.
All in all, I'm happy with the outcome with the Carbotech pads and the centric rotors. They seem to stop just as well as the OEM pads and rotors, at least in normal driving now that they are bedded in. I don't track the car, so I'm not worried about fade.

The pattern is the preferred pattern, but the depth of the cuts is pretty surprising. New OEM rotors don't have nearly the amount of cross hatch the Centrics do.

Glad to hear they are working out. From what I have read people that have purchased the premium rotors from Raybestos that they come labeled "Made in China" also. I do believe that even Brembo is doing some manufacturing in China as well.
Hopefully they will last over time.

FWIW, it seems the price has returned from the stratosphere on the OEM units. They're back down to the $197 price I paid in October at one dealership.

Your front pad size seems a bit short on the top outer edge..
Inside edge looks fine, but looks like you have a good 3-4 mm's of unused rotor there.
Pad material is more than likely smaller than oem size.
The surface of the rotor will eventually fade in after a 1,000 miles or so..
The Carbotech bobcats are very forgiving to the rotors.

The rotors I took off had a deep ring at the edge, just about exactly the same as what appears in the photo. So far, everything seems to be settling in fine. Stopping power seems good, though it usually takes a couple of hundred miles for new brakes to really set. No squealing, no squeaking, no vibrations.
I would have gone OEM rotor at $197 each. The price I was quote was nuts.

BTW here is the "Hone pattern" on new OEM Brembo rotors...
They are only circular...
I also had an unfavorable amount of unused rotor from the bobcats.
Sadly, I had no choice but to take them off...

No doubt there's truth to this, but the IS F rotors are marked Made in Italy. I have four sets of fronts and they all say the same thing.
FWIW, it seems the price has returned from the stratosphere on the OEM units. They're back down to the $197 price I paid in October at one dealership.

Everything seems to be working well.
There is a bit of unused area and it is about 1.5-2 mm more than the OEM pads. The OEM pads left a bit more ridge at the ID, but a smaller ridge at the OD.
All in all, I think I'm just going to live with them. It has been raining so damn much that I haven't washed the rims thoroughly yet, but the dusting is way down. The pads are quiet and don't chatter, so for street driving, seem to be completely adequate.
I think that Carbotech needs to put another couple of millimeters of meat on the pads at the outer diameter. Overall I'm happy with the performance and results, for daily driver use.
