Holy chit!!

That car COULD be #1 in my book if the rear end did not look like a Toyota Camry. Every time I see it I get angry. It reminds me of a regular ole' sedan other than the quad pipes.

2009 article says the cup tires on the M3 only shaved 0.2 off the previous time with stock PS2.

So yes, stock for stock.. the IS-F is faster on this track by 0.2 seconds.

Benz just stated the C63 sedan keeps the 6.3 it has. It is possible the upcoming coupe will get the new 5.5

LOL The BMW guys are burning up in their popped collars and throwing their bluetooth headsets out the window
Guys let the results speak for themselves and not go to other forums to stir the pot. Do you really think a lot of those posters are going to listen to facts anyway

Some of those numbers are pretty neat to read into. The GT500 has another 100+ hp on the IS-F yet the peak speed was higher on the IS-F. The CTS-V coupe is .2 seconds slower than the CTS sedan (sedan was tested in 08 though) but it is noteworthy in how consistent the drivers have been. M3 08 vs. M3 2010 is about the same but what a huge jump for the IS-F from 08 to 11. No changes in anything but LSD and suspension. Back in 08, I was really disappointed to see the SS Cobalt have a better lap time and now the IS-F spanks the STI and the Evo. I'm even surprised a Hyundai Genesis does better than the STI and has a huge top speed advantage in the LL1 category.

The way they grouped the class is strange, isn't it? You have a 230hp RX8 all the way to a 550hp Shelby.

Maybe they were going for power-weight ratio but the Shelby is 3820 lbs so very similar to the IS-F with an 130hp advantage. So them saying the Shelby 'wins' the LL2 class and not the IS-F is about as telling as if they said the IS-F won the class over the 230hp RX8...

I love the new Lightning Lap results as they relate to the IS-F. That said, even with the suspension and LSD improvements, I have a hard time believing an 8 second differential at VIR. I'm not questioning the 3:05.4 time of the IS-F, but I did, and still do, question the Lightning Lap time of the 2008 IS-F. My buddy, who owns an '08 IS-F (OEM suspension; PS2s), and has significant track time at VIR ran much faster than C/D did with the '08 car. He wrote C/D a Letter to the Editor, along with documentation of his lap times, but never received a response and the letter was never published.

What did your buddy run with his 08?

3:09.9 to 3:10.4 is what I recall but an associate told me he went faster with practice. He is posted overseas (Langley) and is out of pocket as a result. I thought we might be able to go directly to VIR but they rented the track and kept the results to themselves. The point of his letter to C/D was that he had had very little track time in the scheme of things and had handily beaten C/D's 3:13ish time. If documentation can be found that he went faster, I will post up the details here.

Wow that's a 4 second difference compared to C&D's lap time of 3:14. That being the 2011 ISF being around 4 seconds quicker then the 08 sounds more realistic. Heck the LSD add on was quicker by only 2 seconds around fuji speedway. 8.6 seconds quicker is unbelievable from just LSD and tweaked stock suspension. Either the C&D test driver was a crappy driver or he was having a bad day when he pulled 3:14 with the 08.

I'm right there with you, bud. I've been to VIR but never driven it. For the life of me, I cannot see how you can make up 8.6 seconds on that track with the same car, only with a mechanical LSD and other OEM suspension tweaks. To me, there are only three possibilities: (1) The driver was having a bad day; (2) The car was hurt; or, (3) The driver was sandbagging. I have not read the article but, with that kind of time differential between, essentially, the same car on the same course, I believe a more thorough and detailed explanation is required of C/D. Attributing the 8.6-second gain to an LSD and suspension tweaks is insulting to our collective intelligence and implies the difference is all in the running changes made to the '11 model.

EDIT: Maybe some members who do have VIR experience can chime in about the possibility of making up 8.6 seconds under the conditions noted.

I think it was sandbagging/sucky driver. Maybe he had T/C on and was using auto shifting or something. C'mon - slower than a Chevy Cobalt SS? That was frankly embarrassing to read when I read it back in 08. How can they possibly take one of the turns 10+ mph faster than before? Did the new PS2 tires suddenly have .2 G more grip? Oh wait, did the 08 have the Bridgestone tires on? One of the things I don't get is why doesn't Lexus send all their demo/test models with the superior tires? Do they want bad publicity and poor results in comparos?

^Key point right here, "this track". All of us already knew that the IS-F and M3 were comparable cars, and most of us probably cross shopped them. The M3 could still be faster around other tracks. No point taking this for more than it really is.

In general, please don't troll m3post... I know I'd be pissed if they came here and started trolling

What I do like from the results is that you can clearly see a difference with the 2011 model's revisions. The past review mentioned that the previous setup simply wasn't confidence inspiring. I'd venture to say that driver confidence is a big factor to the huge improvement in lap times.
