I would say just anticipate stops. Brake lightly instead of braking heavy and late. Downshifting puts stress on your gearbox and tranny.

This is a great thread as it appears that there are definitely two different opinions on the subject of downshifting to assist braking. I do it often in my '09 IS F as I have done in other cars I've owned. No problems so far! Even when I don't I've noticed, as I'm sure others have, that the transmission downshifts on its own when slowing down to come to a stop or in heavy traffic. When I was doing research on the IS F I read that the engineers knew that the vehicle would be driven hard so they engineered it to be able to withstand the rigors of racing and hard street driving. Of course, this doesn't mean petal to the metal all the time either and everything mechanical will eventually wear and probably break but the F should be able to handle downshifts as well as high rpm upshifts too. Since this vehicle is relatively new only time will tell how the mechanicals hold up as high miles are accumulated on them. I know that it makes driving more fun using the paddle shifters even in drive mode during my daily commutes.

i have never had a problem downshifting, i do it all the time. i was actually taught to downshift to slow down, but use the brakes to stop. the is-f seems to shift harder than my stick since i can actually press and depress the clutch to shift smoother.
