I tried it for about a month. I figured without that 37 lbs in the rear, I'd at least get maybe .5 mpg better on fuel economy. But I did not notice any real mpg improvement nor did I notice any increase of horsepower. So I put it back. The backend feels more stable with the extra weight and rides more smoother IMO.

50 lbs is not worth the peace of mind I have of having a spare in my semi-daily driver. In a track car, sure, but 50lbs won't make a noticable difference in a daily.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this subject. I agree that it is probably best to remove the extra weight if you are tracking the car or of you are expecting to race youre favorite M3 soon. Otherwise, you may miss the spare at the most inoppertune time.

If you had only 1 gallon of gas in the tank, you would be approximately 100 lbs lighter than with a full tank...1/4 tank would be about 80 lbs lighter.

yup, i wanna say that a gallon of gas weighs ~ 6 pounds?

so for the drag strip... 80lbs less in gas and 40 lbs less in spare tire = benefit?

what about the sacrifice of traction?

I want to say that a gallon weighs eight pounds.

1 gallon = 4 quarts

1 quart = 32 ounces

16 ounces = 1 pound

Just leave the spare tire home. I haven't had a flat in 25 years.

Different liquid types weigh different amounts. Also, fluid ounces are not the same as (dry) ounces. Fluid ounces are a measurement of volume (space), not weight.
