Hi everyone,

After a few beers at a family get together, I let my son drive my IS F home (he does not drink). Well he was using the paddle shifters to downshift into third to turn onto the freeway on ramp. He shifted into fourth and then, for some reason, went to shift into fifth using the stick. Only problem was that the car was in D not M. Needless to say the car went into neutral and revved to about 6K. He quickly shifted it back into drive and we continued down the freeway. Does anyone think this may have hurt the transmission by doing this? I'm just grateful that the shift gate is such that he couldn't shift into reverse! Everything seemed to be alright and it shifted as normal but now I'm a bit worried. By the way, my son was quite embarrased and he said he felt like an ***. I really didn't get angry at him as it was an accident. I guess only time will tell if anything was damaged.

U have nothing to worry about....Lexus test drivers do that on the vehicle during test runs of the product to check durability of the transmission...lis he held it for minutes then that would be a problem...but a quick over rev then he put it back into drive is ok...just wipe down the dash and tell her "Your sorry" and I promise she will drive you like new lol

I am sure the car is just fine. If that is all it took to damage the car, we all would be in trouble! No issues.

I don't think there will be any damage to the tranny. I'm still wondering how, if at all possible, to shift in D mode with the stick. Maybe he accidentally tried upshifting and it went to neutral that way (?) But I don't know if it's doable to shift in D mode other than using the paddle shifters. Props to your son for the quick judgment on the freeway. He was probably more scared than you were. More practice time with the F for him.

Hey you guys thanks alot for the replies and the reassurances that all is well! Very much appreciated. Yeah, this machine seems to be built for more torque and hp than it has so that it can handle some abuse with no problem. I usually drive it in manual mode but I forgot to tell him that you need to shift into M before using the shifter. I know he'll have no problem once I go through it with him and as you all know, manual shifting the F is really fun and the best way to drive it (my opinion, of course).

It will be fine. There's no way its damaged, otherwise alot of F's would be in the shop right now.

I'm sure more than one here has done that. I usually drive in Manual mode but a couple of times while in auto I've tried to upshift with the stick... scary feeling! The car is fine, enjoy the beers!

Its happened to me before. Its gonna take way more than that to damage the tranny.

what a relief that just happen 2 me was driving in m then went back in auto thinking im in m and throw it into neutral , and i quickly had put it back in drive !

haha my friend did the same thing showing off to a girl on the highway. Ultra fail but this was last summer car hasn't had any issues since. I wouldn't lose sleep over it

People on here complain about Lexus being "un-tune-able" but this is one of the benefits, the engine cannot be over rev'd and the transmission cannot be forced to do anything damaging to it.
