Strange noise, help!
I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and there really has been some helpful info here. I could use some help with an issue that came up today. So I bought an cpo '08 with about 40k miles. The car has been pretty solid and there didn't seem to be any issues over the month or so that I've had the car. Then today, out of nowhere, I start hearing this terrible grinding sound. Almost metal on metal, but only when the car is moving. The really odd part is that turning left made it worse but I slight right turn stopped it. It sounded like it was coming from the wheel well or brakes but i cant say for sure. When I made my final right home the sound stopped and now I can't repeat it. Should I take it to the dealer or does anyone have any ideas? Sorry for the long winded response. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like it could be a brake pad that is way down. That happens when the pad start grinding into the rotor and can be random. Sometimes they will sound worse turning left or right and sometimes they won't make any noise until they get really bad. Does it get worse when you brake hard? Have the brake pads been replaced? Do you see grind marks in the rotor?

According to the dealer paperwork pads were replaced during the certification process. I don't see any marks or stress on the rotors. I will say that i don't completely trust the dealer i bought from though. What other symptoms would there be with the wheel bearings?

check that the lug nuts are tight. I've had a family member and couple friends with the exact same symptoms and each time, the wheel was barely hanging on. A quick tightening of the lugs and I sent them on their way. No issues ever since.

1. Brake pads
2. Rotor floating or cracked
3. Bearing, but highly doubt it
4. One of rear axles has shifted a bit. A clicking noise is heard. Mine has happened going on twice now. Wide tires and hardcore driving causes this one.

Took the car out for a quick spin this morning to see if I could replicate the sound. First I checked the lugs, everything is tight, so that doesn't appear to be the issue. I still had no luck in recreating the sound. The curious thing for me yesterday was that the car felt, by in large, fine yesterday even when it was making that sound. Throttle response felt normal and didn't feel different, braking felt smooth overall. It looks like I'll just take it to a dealer and see if they can find anything.
