Hi folks,
I am going to start searching for an IS F, and curious what mods we can do in California that will pass smog? I know headers won't pass, but outside of the normal air box and exhaust, what else can we do here? I'd like to hit close to 400whp, but not sure if I can get there and still be legal.
thanks all (and if you'd like to PM me the "how" or "what," that would be great).
I'm in San jose,
Quad

For "Smogging" in California, there are mods that fail the sniffer and mods that fail visual. Headers + HF cats often pass the sniffer, but fail visual. So if you find a place that is lax on the visual, you may get by. Headers + race pipes will always fail the sniffer.
The best option when possible is to just buy a new car. You get a 5 year pass on smogging it (unless the police ticket you while pulled over for a mod). Otherwise you can always swap parts before/after smogging if you keep the stock parts. Headers aren't a quick swap out, but cats and cat-back are. If you can't do the work yourself, just budget for the labor as a cost of making extra power.
