weird that gas octane 87 vs 91 would hurt the engine performance. As far as I know, higher octane rate only help prevent knock and early combustion in the engine. If you are not racing the engine where it would operate at high RPM, then high octane rate is a wast IMO. Last week I had a RX350 as a loaner while the dealership replacing my seat and I put octane 87 in it and it runs fine for the entire tank.

Not weird at all. You don't need to race an engine to put a load on it, and that's when octane values take on their greatest importance.
