maybe you don't own it...so you don't have to pay?

then again, what if it's a loan and you're making payments...at that point you still don't own it?

don't ask me what they use to determine value causeGM I have no idea
In MA, they base the excise tax off the original MSRP of the base model of the vehicle and it depreciates over the next 5 years. It's a 2.5% tax off the adjusted value. In the first year, it's 100% of the MSRP, the 90%, then 75%, 60% and I think it finally bottoms out at 10%.

Luckily, I think the IS-F gets lumped in with the Lexus IS, so the value is relatively, low. My excise tax for this year on my 2008 was $140. So I think the original MSRP comes to $35k or something.

Same thing happened with the CTS-V- it was listed as a generic CTS, so the MSRP was a lot lower than if they did it by specific model.

Of course, you get screwed with some cars- for example, a Subaru WRX STi gets taxed at $30k+ for MSRP.

I hate this state.

The leasing company pays it but it's usually just added into the lease payment one way or another. It's only the first 2-3 years that the excise tax is really bad. On a $30k car, you are looking at $750 for the first year and $675 for the second year.
