Default 275/40R19 Rear Tires

Quick question - I did search and couldnt find a yes/no answer so hopefully this is a quick one for you tire masters out there.

I know the ISF comes with the following stock tires

front - 225/40 R19
rear - 255/35 R19

I'm looking at putting some conti DWS's on it since its in desperate need and I've had good luck with these in the past (as have others on the forum). Anyways - Any reason I couldnt put 40 series tires on front and rear? I assume it would just give the rear a little more cushion for potholes. thoughts?

275/40R19 proposed rear tires (standard 225/40R19 on the front - replacing both front and rear with the conti DWSs).

Thanks

I would make sure you upsize the width on the front wheels too. Otherwise you are going to have some wicked understeer with your new Drag car.

Here is some information on the sizes:

front/rear

STOCK 225/40/19 - 255/35/19

MIDRANGE 235/40/19 - 265/35/19

AGRESSIVE 245/35ZR19XL - 275/30ZR19

AGRESSIVE 245/35/19XL - 285/30/19

A 275/40/19 tire would be much too tall for the ISF application, and may infect rub. The stock 255/35/19 OD is 26". The 275/40/19 tire is close to 2" taller than stock. That's an immense difference, and I really don't think they will fit in the confines of the fender. Not to mention the electronics that will be thrown off by such a change.

I am running Yokohama's.
Front: 245/35ZR19
Rear: 285/30ZR19

Lou and I had some discussion on this in the other forum. Lou is one of the most informed person about tire sizes. I am not very pleased about going too wide. I will suggest 275 max in the rear. 245 in the front is definitely good. I do not like Michellin. I always go with Yokos, I don't know why but I like the performance and durability.

Why don't you just stick with the stock sizes? I have Conti DWS stock sizes all around and it rides like a dream. no road noise whatsoever even after 8k miles

Good point - and glad to hear you are happy with the DWS's - I wanted larger rear's to help keep the power planted down. I'll stick to stock height though.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - exactly what I was looking for :-)

off to tire rack i go :-)

I would again highly suggest making the front tires wider.

The car already is set up for understeer from the factory, you will only make it worse by adding more possible traction path to the rear. In my opinion/experience, 225 width tires on the front of this car is too small for it. (however I am not a professional suspension/tire engineer

I second the suggestion for PSS tires. I had DWS tires before, but unless you plan on having to drive in snow occasionally, the PSS tires handle wet conditions well and are much better for dry conditions. They are a fantastic overall tire for me so far (1k miles on them).

The PSS is a great tire, but if your like me, and want a 285/30/19 in the back, it's not available in the PSS. However the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions are. The more I drive on these things the more I like 'em. My thread is here:

I'm not really a fan of messing with the tire widths... IMO the tires came from the factory a certain size for a reason...now before the guys bash me and say "you can't make judgments before you try it"... I can tell you my opinion though: it adds weight to the car, which seems to offset the fact that the understeer is reduced. Not to mention in another thread it has also been discussed that speedometer accuracy is also reduced when upsizing.

^Just my opinion.

Not going to bash VJ but I want to put some input on the wider tires. Anyways the wider tires doesn't add much weight compared to stock...not that I notice anyway when I had my DW on. Traction in wet and dry improved and also my tread life increase due to the change in brand. The speedometer accuracy isn't that far off. If I remember a member pointed out that in 50k miles your losing 500 miles which isn't much. If you go PSS I suggest sticking with the stock size. If you go with another brand I suggest going wider.

...or just go wider with PSS tires...best combo IMO.

Just curious...why do you suggest 225/255 for PSS and wider for other brands?
