Oil Changes - Needing "re-clarification" or consensus.
So there was a recently posted question about oil changes. And If I'm not mistaken one of the members had mentioned to do it every 8,000 Miles.
I've been changing my oil on my IS-F every 5K, as a matter of fact even before it hits it; and have been using Mobil 1 5W-30. I don't track and this car mainly sees the freeway!
I was just wondering what the general consensus is?!?! And yes the manual says 5 K. Again... I'm simply looking for the consensus.
Not looking for an A%$%$ hole answer. I can think of one member that will do just that!

Lobuxracer will come in and say he sends his oil in for analysis at Blackstone Labs and they say don't change it often. I think he's doing over 10k oil change intervals.
Personally, I change my oil every 5,000 miles. It's a 15 minute job, and there's nothing wrong with having cleaner oil in the engine IMO. If you drive lots of highway, and you don't mash on your car a lot, i don't see a problem with 7500 mile oil changes.
Read your manual, it will probably say something like that...."normal driving conditions" and it should mention something about stop and go traffic etc.

There is no "consensus" on this issue, so I don't think you're going to get what you asked for, unfortunately. Oil change intervals and oil brands has been a topic on every performance car forum I've been a member of, and the arguments are always the same. You have the camp that will do exactly what the manual says because "hey, it's the car manufacturers own words! It has to be right!." You have the camp that will do it every 3000 mi because that's what Pep Boys/Jiffy Lube/etc said to do because "hey, they're specialists in oil!" You have the camp that gets wayyyy into the weeds about the chemical makeup of the oil and starts drawing molecular charts about it (read the oil journals on the S2000 board) which takes it to a Chemistry 201 level, then you have the guys that swear by Blackstone Labs.
The bottom line is that if you use the correct weight, make sure your oil level doesn't get dangerously low, and change your oil at least once per year (unless you track the car or drive 20K+ miles) you PROBABLY won't break anything. I think Lobux and others have proven that running a good oil out over 10K miles is not going to add any undue wear to the moving parts of your engine. I also think that if you feel more comfortable changing your oil ever 5000mi like the manual says, you won't hurt anything doing it that way either.
I am about 7700mi from my last change (Amsoil 5W30 full synthetic) and have a case of new Amsoil sitting in my garage awaiting my next change which will probably happen in the next couple of weeks.

Not to get into a battle of opinions, but generally you should consider the brand/type of oil you are using and change it accordingly. Taking Amsoil as an example, they clearly mark each grade of their oil with an idiot sticker of 3k, 10k, or 25k.
Personally, I use the signature series amsoil because it is the best and I like the way it smells and emotional reasons, but shy away from running it the full 25k and always change it in the spring. If you switch to a new longer life oil, you should probably run it for about half its life and then do an oil analysis to make sure nothing is going wrong over its life time.
