Acceleration slip

Acceleration slip
Hey Guys,
New member here, just picked up a 2011 IS-F, 22.5k miles from a dealer. During the purchase I test drove the car, inspected etc. and everything was good.
One thing I noticed when driving the car was that sometimes there's a slight 'slip' when trying to accelerate. This usually occurs when I'm in normal driving mode. It happens sometimes in sports mode too. It usually happens when the car is slowing down during heavy traffic. I attempt to step on the gas to get it going, the RPM shoots up about 500-800 RPM, drops back down, and the car picks up acceleration power.
Now I know this could be due to the transmission trying to get itself down to the right gear. But it also feels foreign to me. I come from a manual car previously, and the experience I'm feeling is the same as when your clutch starts to go and it 'slips'. And since this transmission isn't a normal transmission in like a Toyota Avalon, the slip feeling just doesn't feel right.
Anyways, just thought I'd see if this is normal before bringing it to the dealer to make a fuss about it.
Appreciate it guys.

Hmm. First thing I would do is reset the ecu and let it learn your habits. See how that goes. If it still does it, get a tech with you to drive it and build the same scenario with him. Take it from there...My suggestion. Also, I have an 11 and do not experience this. My thoughts...

Mine does the same thing. It does it more when I'm going at a slight downhill in heavy traffic. It does feel like the transmission is slipping. If you are slowing down and try to accelerate again the RPMS go up, then go down and the car accelerates. I'm not sure whether this normal or not, but it definitely feels weird.

Seeing the responses and seeing other people have this symptom does make me feel a bit at ease, due to the fact that maybe this is just how the transmission operates. I'll definitely reset the ecu this weekend and see if it keeps popping up.

Resetting the ECM is a waste of time. You'd want to reset the TCU, but you wouldn't want to go through the whole learning process for initializing the TCU after you did this.
Mine does this usually when cold and downhill. It's commonly referred to as transmission flare. There are a couple of work arounds, the easiest of which is hitting Sport mode. Next to that, just hit the gas a little harder than you think is good, and it will go away instantly. An aftermarket throttle controller can also make this disappear by making the throttle pedal more sensitive. I live at the top of a small hill so I get this every time I drive. I usually just hit the gas a little harder...

I'm now consistantly seeing an RPM surge in my 2012, on cold starts first thing in the morning on intial acceleration after pulling out of my driveway; our roadway is level.
It feels just like the transmission flare I used to have in my 2005 ES, and it was a PITA then and I'll be danged if I'm going to put up with it again. To me, it's unnacceptable for a high performance car to have this issue. If you want to read about how much of a problem it is/was for ES owners, do a search on the ES Forums for "transmission flare" and read through the 50+ pages of results that will come up.
It was considered an important enough issue for a TSB to be issued for certain year models (2003 through 2007, if I remember correctly) and the dealer usually suggested complete transmission resplacement to resolve the problem.
I'm scheduled to have my SA take a look at it this week. I'll keep everyone updated.

mine does it when it's cold. seems to be common "non issue" even though it's a bit annoying. my buddy's 08 does the same thing when cold if coasting and then getting back on the gas in 1-3 gears.
