Default do we need exhaust back pressure or not?

I was wondering if the F runs better with back pressure (muffled mufflers) or better with a straight thru exhaust...im sure dyno numbers will increase with straight exhaust...but we know sometimes the numbers could be different on actual load conditions...anyone have any experience?

I've been trying to search videos if anyone tested muffler deletes vs stock, muffler delete vs other catback exhaust but could'nt find any vs videos

There's much to read about this very subject on the web. Bottom line is, making more power is not really about back pressure, it's all about exhaust flow. For optimal flow you need the right sized pipe and the optimal components to insure a good flow (velocity). To big, and it won't flow, too small and it'll choke.

But, to answer your question, removing or modifying impediments in an exhaust system with properly sized pipe is always a good thing as far as power is concerned, not so good as far as noise is concerned.

Anybody saying any engine needs "backpressure" doesn't understand exhaust physics. Besides, your question sounds more like, I want to know if anyone else has tried these solutions for exhaust configuration, not "do we need backpressure."

Lou's explanation is dead on the money.

Think of your engine a a pump, because it is. It pumps air/fuel in and exhaust out. The more efficiently you run this "pump" the more power you can free up.

So let's ask what the optimal pipe diameter may be?

That I don't know. I'm sure that question would start a spirited and informative debate.

Before a big race, I usually stock up on steel wool and jam it into my exhaust. They don't know what hit 'em.

The attached is from the MagnaFlow Website. Third party dual systems for the ISF are all 2½" constant diameter. Ant that IMO, is the correct size for the ISF 4,969 CC (303 CI) engine. The stock exhaust has multi sized pipes, and IMO does not breath well. The stock manifolds (headers) also do not flow very well IMO.
