My fronts are former rears, so they are 96Y. I would not be keen on putting something with a lower load rating than the original OEM tire. Probably OK, but definitely NOT recommended.

I would also like a square setup, but I'd want 295s on all four corners. We do not own a light car.

Just ordered my Michelin PSS today.

265/35/19 and 235/40/19 from TireRack, they even called me to update my order after the original size was not available.

I ended up with a plus size that will fit. Tires should be here early next week.

Understeer where? Unless you are tracking/autox'ing the car regularly I don't think I would worry too much about going that big in the front. My car had little to no understeer during autocross and that was on old RE11's in OEM sizes.

OP, you might want to contact your local discount tire and see what warehouses have in stock. I got a new set of PSS in OEM sizes recently through them when tirerack was out of stock on everything else.

So, I bought the car last year with 225/40 and 265/35, but didn't know these were not to scale until researching replacement sizes. I ordered 235/40/19 and 265/35/19 PSSs from TireRack on Monday and had them installed today. It definitely made a difference and I am very happy with the results.

Understeer on the street and on the track. I think it's common knowledge that these cars understeer from the factory. I may have exacerbated that when I put on the 235/35 265/35 combo, since I inadvertently increased the difference in overall diameter between front/rear (to nearly an inch). I was surprised at how much more it began pushing on this slightly off-camber right turn going into my neighborhood. Front tires were squealing & could not hold the line.

I put 255/35 on the fronts last Thursday and drove the NJMP Lightning circuit on Saturday (RR Racing sponsored event). I love the 255's up front so far They gave me so much confidence going into turns. In hindsight, I should have pushed them a bit harder because I don't think I got near their limit except for once or twice. I'm happy with my decision. During the second session, the instructor suggested that I should get moved up to group B for the rest of the day

Also, I took that same turn into my neighborhood very quickly as I arrived home from NJ yesterday. It turns so much better now.
