Maybe a better alternative before you whip out the circular saw.

It's not a Costco battery but Antigravity Batteries just came out with a new Li-Ion car battery. It's pricey but supposedly avoids the previous problems of discharging the battery too low and damaging the cells. They claim no more dead batteries and jumping the car off. You just open the hood and push a button and there's enough energy stored to start your car and re-energize the battery. It's only 10 lbs but $60/lb... It would take a lot of carbon fiber to save 25 lbs of weight. Granted, you're saving it in the wrong place but if it's a daily driver you probably aren't tweaking for that extra .1 sec savings around the track anyways.

Wow 599 for the battery. I'm still not entirely convinced though. I know lithium has been around for a while, heck I used to fly RC with them. But even then you had to respect them closely.

It doesn't. The Costco battery has side handles you need to cut off for the cover to fit. My cover is currently sitting in my trunk right now. I also had to put a piece of plywood under the battery or it wouldn't bolt down with the existing battery mount as the battery is about .75" too short.
