Interesting, thanks for the explanation

Are passenger airlines allowed to go past the speed of sound, or is that considered Mach 1?

167 MPH in a fully built, supercharged E46. I was the passenger.

150 MPH in the Stage 2 STi, somewhere out there. LOL

165'ish.... several times... all in mexico of course... crazy how fast things are flying by you at that speed... I always start thinking about "what if's" at that speed...(blow a tire, deer jumps out, car pulls out, etc... all equalling death most likely...) get nervous and let off... : (

Judging by all of the laws being broken in Mexico, I'm guessing that nobody else has seen the inside of a Mexican Prison (or jail).......smh.

I try to hit 100 every day into work........or perhaps I'm dreaming this....I just don't know!!

All this speed out there, everyone be safe!!

no... going past the SOS (which varies in altitude) will break a common planes wings off.. the engines and wings were not designed to go that fast.. the concorde however, because of it's delta wing can sustain supersonic speed.. you can "speed cheat" by riding the jetstream and theoretically have a ground speed going past the speed of sound but the relative speed of the a/c will not even be close to SOS.. also breaking the SOS creates a byproduct called sonic boom.. the concorde was not allowed to fly across the united states.. can you imagine how many broken windows we would have? and it had to fly way above everyone else that's why it had afterburners to be able to reach a higher altitude were it performs at best.. now back to OP's original post

Too bad the Concorde was retired, would've been cool to have an experience like that for a passenger plane!

Back from intermission and onto the thread

If a plane is 2 miles under the sos and you run from the back of the plane to the front do you break the speed of sound Ha Ha.
