I'd love to hear an explanation from @gromaudio as to what this entails exactly! It's going to be formatted to Fat32 or exFAT (although I don't believe Android 8 would need exFat as I'm sure the update will be under 32gb.

I knew I read it somewhere and at the time I thought it was scaremongering to justify the purchase of GROM's SD card as opposed to a download and load to your own card!

Haha what a joke. Android is very easy to update through the recovery there is no special formatting it's just a matter of having the file on the SD card formatted in fat32 is fine.
Even if the vline needed some super special formatted SD card it's easy for grom to make a small program/tool that could format the card and extract the update files onto it. Kind of like when you're making a bootable USB stick.

I get what Grom is doing...
They are afraid of chinese companies getting their codes for v8.1.. VL1/VL2 is basically a china-sourced hardware and Grom added extra software.
I get it, and I see the need for encrypted cards. Look at our NAV sd cards, those can't be copied either.
If Grom never promised an upgrade to 7.1 and released these 8.1 cards for $20, I will buy one TODAY. But that didn't happen.
I saw that Grom replied earlier about how the $20 is for shipping and handling... ehhh.. I would take the loss and keep the customers happy.

Amazing, if I wanted to buy this, I'd have to pay more for the shipping than the product price. How is it possible to get an item from China weighing more with free postage.

We are working on this issue with shipping cost service provider. We think the shipping cost should be much lower. All INTL customers will get a refund for a cost difference as we solve the issue.

The real issue is not that they promisedto update us, its that they actually advertised it as shipping with 7.1. they said they'll ship it with 5.1 as it is more stable as they do the testing on 7.1. they kept delaying then they said theyre skipping 7.1 to 8.1.

Mmoomm, but please don't send it until at least August ( that's if you do actually send it) with no apologies in true Grom fashion. While you enjoy the 20k you had up front!

We do not charge for software updates we provide. We only cover our expenses that deal with SD card sourcing, processing and testing. As explained in FAQ there is no way to update to 8.1 without SD card. This is related to 8.1 security features that been made available by manufacturer after we get VL2 with 5.1 delivered to customers.

The solution to this is to take a $20 deposit, send the SD card, have your customer update their device, and then refund the money when the customer shows proof of shipping the card back to you. You can then re-use the SD card for the next customer (after you have formatted it and reloaded it to prevent anyone putting malware in it) and repeat the process all over.
It is still not as convenient for your customers but much better than what you are offering now.

I want to know if the new update improves the Google apps, (Maps in particular) It's currently unusable in the daytime as the roads don't have an outline, all white.
Would love to hear from somebody who has the update.

I would not have thought that any update would sort the Google map problem with roads being very hard to define but I may be wrong.
This vid was posted ( by a regular Grom poster) less than a month ago and it seems he was quite happy with it up until the point he had problems in updating his unit, which had happened before.
