Pilot Sport 4S for sale at Tirerack--dubious warning?
Was pretty surprised to read this disclaimer on the new 4s tires (available 01March):
Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.
Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Max Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. Compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.
No mention of anything like this for the Supersports. I wonder if sitting in the garage during the winter months would have more deleterious effects on this tire over seasons. Or if this guidance is true, to some extent, for all max performance tires and they are now pushing the envelope with the 4s? Are we going to have to make up the guest room for the 4s's during the winter?
$1000 for a set of oem sizes, somprice seems to be in line with e Supersports.

Interesting?? Yea I haven't had any issues with my Supersports in the winter cracking?? Could be what you said that Michelin is pushing the envelope of performance with the 4s and has different restrictions than the Supersports?
Been waiting on some reviews on the PS4S to come out, really interested to see the gains Michelin made over the PSS?

That's really de rigueur for all Extreme and Max Performance summer tires. Luckily I live in Arizona so I don't that issue. However, in the winter, when I go anyplace that's cold, the F stays home and I take the truck. All Extreme and Max Performance tires have a cold weather warning, but not as strongly worded.
Plus, you really don't want to be driving in the cold with a Hi-Po tire because performance will suck big time, and you'll be a danger to yourself and anyone around you.

Same thing was true for Pilot Super Sports... they just didn't explicitly tell you in the documentation.

Can they be mounted on a parked car though? The op posting states they can't be used to support a vehicle but I'm hoping they mean if they weren't mounted previously. If they're already on the car and you store it as is I'm hoping it'll be okay, otherwise we'll need a heated garage.

^^^^Yes, Extreme or Max Performance tires should ideally never be exposed to below freezing temperatures. Bad things happen to the rubber compound. If I lived in the cold (I never will again) I would have dedicated winter wheels, and my summer wheels would be kept in a temperature controlled environment. It's just me, but if I could afford it, I would never drive my F in freezing weather.

I'm in az so wouldn't mind but I don't trust Michelin street tires on track. The PSS dried out too fast. Also looking at the tread pattern you can tell it's not a track tire. Just an amazing street tire

- Dry braking from 62 mph to 0 has been cut by 3.54 feet compared to the Pilot Super SPort for a total distance of 110.43 ft.
- On Michelin’s 1.6-mile test track, the PS4S dropped 0.16 seconds from the PSS’s time.
- 9 percent tread wear improvement over the PSS.

it also says here that independent testing showed the tires lasted over 30k miles

How do you not like Michelin tires?? Across the board for almost every type of tire they are at or very near the top. In fact, aside from picking up a ridiculously cheap set of Continental DSWs on clearance for my other car, I doubt I will ever buy anything but Michelin again. Snow tires, the best. SUV tires, the best. PSS, the best, at least for the moment. Yeah they are more expensive, but I've found they are almost always worth it vs the competition.
