Yes, but efficiency and performance can go hand in hand, they didn't add 8 gears for nothing. Compared to it's M/AMG rivals and even the CTSV, it gets far better MPG, just adding to the list of reasons it's a better DD. However, the fuel tank is tiny. I am pretty easy on the pedal DDing throughout the week, and can just barely get to 300 miles a tank, many others I've seen can barely get over 220
I really need to insert some kind of sarcasm indicator in my posts.
To dignify your response: I agree with your initial reaction - just because something is built with performance, it does not mean that reliability/efficiency is ignored. In this case, MPG is not ignored as evidenced by the decision of having an 8-speed auto tranny and foregoing on the dual-clutch (tested on prototype ISF). Unless we are talking about specific-purpose vehicles such as dragster or drifter, vehicles always have an area reserved for MPG/efficiency/performance middle ground.
RE: Saving brakes by downshifting - I wasn't talking about downshifting to save brakes every time you slow the car. I meant in the cases that OP described where there's a long hill, downshift only once at the beginning of the hill, instead of riding your brakes the whole way down.
"Downshifting saves your brakes" was considered good advice... when Truman was President. Brake caliper pads are far cheaper to replace than automatic transmission clutches.

Obvious opinions of those ignorant of safe driving skills in the mountains. Why do you think they check brake temps halfway down from Pikes Peak? There's a practical reason why you can select lower gears in the IS-F and other auto equipped cars. Unfortunately, many people don't actually know how to properly operate their automobiles.

Luv your subtile answer BTW, I have much experience driving in the mountains. I spend quite a bit of time in the mountains in and around Lake Arrowhead. I've also driven over the mountains coming out of San Diego, on the 8, in both a car and a motorcycle. And I wasn't talking about mountainous driving. I was talking about folks slowing down at stop signs or traffic lights while driving on flat roads and downshifting to slow down.
