Peace of mind is worth it for $50 delta per oil change on a special car.

I go cheap on lots of things like those little plastic clips that break all the time. I don't go cheap on oil and tires. Tires are a fundamental safety item. Oil is a longevity item. As was stated in another thread, if you plan to keep the car until the wheels fall off, don't go cheap on oil/fluids. Use quality stuff and it will repay you many times over. If you change cars every few years (not sure there are many folks here now like that), just run whatever meets minimum spec and call it a day. No reason to spend a dime more than necessary on a long term rental.

As I get older, I go cheaper on less stuff. Another example is tools. I'll spend more on nicer tools that I use regularly and need to depend on to be strong/precise, but have no problem buying a cheaper version of a tool that is used less frequently or requires little precision or safety.

Totally agree on tools. There's a reason I bought three TechAngle torque wrenches last Fall, and it wasn't because they were on sale.

The funny thing about tools is, every once in a while you need to fabricate something for a job, and more often that not, it's just slapped together quickly and serves its purpose. Every time you pull that tool out to use it "one last time" you look at the workmanship on it and say, "I really should have done a nicer job of putting this thing together" then 30 years later, you pull out that same tool and kick yourself for not doing what you should have the first time...

I made a mount for a dial indicator to directly measure valve lift on motorcycle engines so I could set cam timing on DOHC engines. Still have that little thing in my box, and boy has it been through some work!

FYI - there is a new kid on the block. Tribodyn 5w-30 tested by 540Rat came up with the best load capacity of any oil he has tested straight from the bottle, and its load capacity actually increased at 275F. I've never seen that happen before. Pretty impressive. Here's the downside - they sell it by the quart only and it's $18 a quart (!?!?!?). That would make the typical 2UR oil change pretty steep. Still, if you want "only the best" there's a new top dog. FWIW, this oil is engineered and sold from Mooresville, NC where all the NASCAR boys play. Might be something to all this after all, just a pretty significant pay to play. QSUD is still the bargain price for a great oil, and Renewable Lubricants is still clearly demonstrated a winner dealing with fuel dilution. I'm not planning on switching, I still have a 5 gallon bucket of RLI, and it cost pretty close to the same as a single oil change with Tribodyn would cost. It does 2 1/2 oil changes for the 2URs.

just switched up to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum from Mobil1 yesterday (after seeing Mobil1 isnt what it used to be). Curious to see if my valvetrain gets “noisier” closer to OCI.

I want the best for my F but (whew) $18 a quart is a steep price.

But im always checking this thread for new news. Lots of good info here

Wow! That's impressive....I've used RLI and now I'm on Amsoil SS but spending money on good oil has never bugged me......maybe I'll try this stuff out on the next oil change

What's your opinion on RLI vs Amsoil SS? Do you do used oil analyses?

I would reference Leanders quote above for the best description as I have not done a UOA on the ISF for a couple years as I got lazy...........I did my research though and the basis for a lot of it was this thread from 2017 that Lance has referenced here with Daniel: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rc-...ml#post9783463

You really can't go wrong with RLI for how it manages fuel dilution for the 2UR-GSE for the stock tune, and Amsoil held the top 2 spots for oil without an additive package until Tribodyn was tested and out edged it in wear protection but not by much. Needless to say you can't go wrong with the top 6 in his ranking list.

1) Prolong Engine Treatment added to 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra, API SN synthetic = 136,658 psi
This oil on its own WITHOUT the Prolong Engine Treatment added to it, has a wear protection capability of 92,569 psi.
2) 5W30 Tribodyn, synthetic = 135,434 psi
3) 0W20 Amsoil Signature Series, synthetic = 134,840 psi
4) 5W30 Amsoil Signature Series, synthetic = 134,352 psi

For the people who want to know.
