Default RCF Mufflers on ISF

Has anybody tried this? Curious to see if that would help give our cars more of that louder RCF sound without having to deal with CARB issues.

You won’t have carb issues with any aftermarket cat back exhaust.

^^^^And how would you know. Indiana is not California. If anyone does a visual at a California inspection, a cat back exhaust system will fail. It won't fail sniffer of OBD, but you are removing the secondary cats.

I think he is talking about chopping off the oem mufflers and welding in the RCF ones.

I was under the impression that cat back exhausts don’t change anything, regardless of how it looks. I doubt the techs know how many cats came on the car... can’t you even get carb certified exhausts systems?

but you will also also notice I said cat back... didn’t say which cat. Are you saying you can’t even do an axle back without failing, yet there are tons of FBO guys in California?

I appreciate your hyper aggressive response though. Cheers.

Bingo.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm almost certain that cat backs as well as removing any cats will lead to automatic failure assuming you don't know a guy (I don't)

They do, they have photographs of the underside of the vehicles they inspect. As I said, if they do a visual, some don't, they will fail.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but you were giving advice on a subject that you really have no knowledge of. I lived in California for 25 years.

The more I learn about California, the happier I am not to live there.

I just saw someone selling (in classifieds) an ISF OEM axle-back, stock Y-pipe with Magnaflow mufflers welded to it. Same Idea, it would just be with RCF mufflers right?

I don't think, it has been done before. It will start with measuring. RR Racing, PPE both make an exhaust upgrades for both cars, perhaps not a bad idea to reach out to them unless you could get an acces to both cars.

Wanted to resonate this.

The techs, at least the one that did my smog check, have access to specifications of all vehicles except for grey market (like certain exotic imports), so they don't need to remember what model comes with how many cats. All they need to do is run the car VIN through the system, and the system will tell them how many cats there should be. What they DON't really check is if your cats are high flow or OEM since that requires a close-up inspection (like jacking the car up).

CA requires both visual and sniffer, and the visual includes inspection of the engine bay regarding your air intake box (non CARB aftermarket intakes are auto fail, whether in a box or not).

So yes, flowrider is correct on all accounts.

A thorough visual involves looking at the underside to the car with a mirror on the bottom of a pole. So yes, they can see under the car.

When I lived in Sacramento, they were always quite thorough and always did full visuals and tailpipe testing. My Supra is now 25 years old and no longer has any smog testing required by Georgia. Best move I ever made.
