Default Vibration when Idling - Radiator Fans?

Hey guys, I got a 2011 ISF w/ 126k miles and I'm getting a pretty strong vibration when the car is idling; can feel it vibrating only the A/C is turned on. I can feel the vibration on the steering wheel and brake pedal when I'm a stop and the fans kicks-in; can't feel it when I'm just driving around. This started out of nowhere about a week ago.

Leaning towards towards the motors for the radiator fans at the moment as the culprit. Any fellow owners came across this issue before?

Appreciate any input!

Now I’m really curious. What makes you think your vibration at idle has anything to do with your fans?

So I watched for a few things:
  • It will vibrate when I first start the car with AC on.
  • If I turn off the AC but with blower on, it will stop vibrating.
  • At a stop sign, I could feel a hard start to the vibration.
    • My theory is since I'm driving, the radiator is getting cooled without having the fans turn on, and when I stop, the fans kick in and begin to vibrate.
  • I also noticed that my passenger side fan has a slight wobble (2-3cm of play from front to back) to it, almost like it's not pushed/bolted in against the motor all the way. My driver side fan has no wobble whatsoever.

I just changed my spark plugs, changed my diff oil and my brake fluid about a week ago.

Well it’s more then likely one of two things. Either you have bolts missing on your fan shroud like I did and rattled OR busted motor mounts which I had as well. To see if you are missing bolts you will have to Jack the car up and pull the plastic shield off from underneath and took a look. Your mounts are more then likely busted or cracked as well. Mine were at 98k miles.

Good to know that I'm at least onto something here...

Do you happen to remember what you ended up replacing and what the part numbers were?

Well as far as the fan shroud I just installed bolts that were missing. My guess is another mechanic was in there prior to me buying the car and just never installed all the bolts back. For my motor mounts I installed solid RR racing mounts.

There is a fan shroud bolt recall I had done on mine. Bolts and fans came loose and got lodged. See if you're covered.

Thanks for link lexicon. Unfortunately, according to the site, I don't have any recalls.

I'm going to give Lexus a call to see if they can help me out.

See if the recall was done. Or Service Bulletin.

During the summer time when my car got really hot, the fans would vibrate at max speed. Once it got cooler out, it stopped. I bought a new fan shroud + motor assembly but never installed it. I plan to next time I take the radiator out. For some reason, there was just enough play to cause it to vibrate.

Thanks for the tip IronNam.

Do you happen to remember the part numbers were for the fan shroud and motor assembly?

Part number for shroud and motors is 16701-38040. I had to buy one after one fan motor started making an ugly howling noise. This was a result of the screws getting loose and the fan's bearing at the back getting worn 1mm oversize. It is no longer possible to buy just the motors, you have to buy the entire assembly with both motors. Not hard to swap out though.

Thanks for the part number, lobux. Wouldn't be surprised at all that the screws came loose on mind and started to wear on the bearings. That would explain the play that I see on the passenger side fan.

I did reach out to Lexus to see what options were available. They told me for my VIN, there were only 4 recalls and they were all completed. So I guess I'm fixing this myself!

I actually didn't end up doing anything to it, it stopped vibrating even when I try explicitly to get it to vibrate. I bought fan and shroud that lobux referenced to, but I didn't end up installing it. Sitting in my garage somewhere.

Fast forward to now where I have Headers+Exhaust+Intake+RR Tune+RR Racing Mounts, when I have the AC off and idling, engine would drop to about 500rpms and vibrate. Assuming this is just par for the course.
